I was having the same problem. But then I tried it again. Clicking "scoreboard_Mac" first and then "start" and it worked. 3rd times the charm?

Major Wood just described what you need to do. It's telling you that you don't have the server shell running. If you've got a Windows box, run the file start-Windows.bat in whatever folder the scoreboard app is located in. Else it will fail to connect to the server.

If your PC is running the server, it'll connect to itself.

Why this matters is that the batch file sets the main PC (the one the scoreboard op is using) as the server. Then remote clients can connect to it to do what they do. Maybe a laptop with its own projector on the other side of the room or the video streaming server using the scoreboard overlay.

Just because you don't NEED remote connectivity doesn't mean the app doesn't need the server running to function.

Before you open "start" you need to open the appropriate server start file. Th

Those files are, start-MacOS.command, start-Windows.bat

you may not see the .sh, .command or .bat, depending on your operating system settings. Just open the one that contains the name of the operating system in it. After that runs, open the start file.

I'm trying to run the new scoreboard software, but when I click on the start button I get an "unable to connect to host: 8000" message.  Help?
