Title: So, what do you do in your "other" life?
Post by: noidd on March 10, 2009, 06:04:03 pm

I thought it might be interesting... When you're not making friends and influencing people on the track, what do you do?

Me?  I'm a Security Incident Handler.  I do forensic examination of electronic evidence, malware reverse engineering, penetration testing (the best job title in existence) and some code hackery.

In my other other life I do comedy.  Mostly improv, some stand-up.

In my other other other life I do sound engineering for local theatres.

This is as good a thread as any to remind people that if they haven't done it already,  to put their league affiliation and such in their signature tag or sidebar info (both in your profile info), so people can not only know what you do in your other life, but specifically where you do what you do in your ref life. It's good info to know for reference purposes, outreach, socializing, travel, etc.

Wow, I'd like to share with the forum on this subject ... but it might compromise my secret identity so I am going to have to refrain from such a trivial indulgence.

In my day job, I'm a mild-mannered inconspicuous clerk for a pharmaceutical company - the perfect cover for a roller derby ref.  :D   Part of the reason I got into derby is because I'm nursing some persistent injuries which prevents me from training in MMA.  Also, any excuse to get me on wheels is a plus.  I love the sport and am anxiously anticipating my copy of "Hell on Wheels" which is due to arrive any day now.

I am not sure if I want to share ;)
e.g. if some of the girls in my league knew I play (amongst other things) bass in in a funk band.. I'd lose a lot of hard earned respect ("funk? yuck!") I also play upright bass, that is the half of the story I do tell them...
since music doesn't pay my bills I work as a graphic/web-designer//project/event-manager in a design agency. so if you need help with your website... please ask someone else ;)

I'm a Inactive Ready Reserve member of the USAF, an AMMO Troop.
And currently a 3A Computer Operator for the Army Air Force Exchange Service, Which is a fancy title for "I keep track of making sure the things we sell get counted/inventoried, in our computer system, and the rest of the time I work as a Key holding Floor Manager.

I'm also a Drummer in a Bagpipe and Drums band, a Middle Eastern percussionist and Dancer, avid Karaoke guy, and a I play Amtgard.

Though for the most part, my non-working hours are spent mainly on Derby/Reffing, and 1day a week on pipe band stuff.

Oh and I like Ren Faires, Me balancing a bottle on my head for fun..

Hunter is speechless?  I am surprised :)

In my other life I do corporate espionage work, mainly tracing the path of intellectual property from a patent to a product, primarily for the courts.

And I supplement that with restorations of vintage Vespa and Lambretta motorscooters, experimental cooking and learning pedal steel guitar.

Hell yeah Bronco, we gotta ride when you come down for Westerns!  What bike(s) you got?
I work at Sportique Scooters, new and vintage bikes, parts, and repair.
I work at the British Bulldog pub as the door guy a few nights a week.
I too ride vintage scooters, though I wouldn't necessarily call them "restorations".  As if scooters weren't dorky enough, I am a proud member of the Jedi Knights Scooter Club (You can't spell Jackass w/o JKSC)
I DJ whenever I got a gig.
I'm looking for a teaching job now that I have removed most of the pics of myself in drag from the internets.
I am an absentee landlord for a property I'm stuck with back in MI.
I recently bought one third of a '72 Porsche 914 that myself and the other 2/3 owners will be learning to rally race in.  It shouldn't be a stretch as I am a retired cab driver.

I used to be the vocalist for a few hardcore punk rock bands... my default pic is from a show I played with one of my bands. I pretty much gave up being in bands for derby, that used to be a big focus for me and once derby took over my life it's now pretty far down on the list. Nails my ass. head (that's assistant head ref) and I are talking about starting another band, I'm sure we'll get on that soon. We'll schedule that around our derby.

I am also the academic challenge coordinator for Harrison Elementary in Lexington. I call the team the HEAT (Harrison Elementary Academic Team).

When I'm not working with the academic team my regular days are spent with first, second and third grade highly structured classroom. We have 4 teachers and ~10 kids in this classroom.

I usually bowl every Sunday, have for about 6 years, since my broken foot is a problem I've missed the last month or so.

Nails and I are also each have of the Lexington Punk directory, people are constantly calling some combination of the 2 of us for phone numbers. If I don't have the number she does and vice versa. There are people who only have our phone numbers memorized because apparently it's easier to call us then to write it down or save it in some sort of electronic device.

In my other life I am the Production Control Manager for a supplier in the auto industry.  Before that I was in Engineering (same company) for 14+ years (I have a BSME from Ohio State).

In my other life I am the proud father of 2 girls, age 8 and 11.  I am starting to realize I may not be smarter than a 5th grader. :o

I secretly like to write and a couple years ago wrote bout recaps for UWeekly.  I also drum for relaxation and enjoy working on/ fixing computers.

I hate my mindless, dead-end job, so in the fall I'm going back to college to get a second Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (and derby may have to go away in the process... boo). I know a few of you on here have been/are engineers, so please email me your words of wisdom or horror stories so I can be better prepared. Yay, math!

In regards to Nails.... yes she knows she's my ass head the teams co-captain's official title is the ass. cap. we are also a league that uses a score whore and the person the keeps the official score is sometimes called the score pimp (since they tell the score whore what to do). The leagues merch person officially listed her job description as "head bitch in charge of merch"

Well, if you're serious... I could probably make one out of aluminum with short or no sleeves for about $750. Materials alone would be about $200, which is the main reason I haven't started making one yet :)

This includes the caveat that even made from aluminum, a chainmail shirt weighs 5-6lbs, is completely impractical, and leaves weird bruise patterns. But it breathes well.

Wow 5-6 lbs is light for a chain shirt, granted I'm used to a 4-2 or 6-1 weave for Chain,

Ruth do you buy your links from Ringlord or crank them yourself?

I had a 1971 Porsche 914 for many years and loved it.  The PCA drivers still turn the top time of the day in a 914.

I would enjoy a ride with you in Colorado, and have never been to Sportique, but Erico and Casa Lambretta know my Visa card pretty well ;)

I myself am a Adult Protective Services (APS) investigator for the state of Washington. Sorta like CPS in a way but I protect vulnerable adults (elderly, developmentally delayed individuals) as defined in RCW 74.34.020 and WAC 388.71. I investigate crimes of sexual abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse, neglect, self neglect, financial exploitation and abandonment.

Side note: I have two *practically sleeved arms* and NO ONE KNOWS AT MY JOB....  :o

My other other life is spent kayaking, fighting Breed Specific discrimination legislature (love my pit bull), remodeling my home, and acting out my days in the dirt as a horticulture enthusiast.

For kicks outside of Derby I ride and formerly road race motorcycles (2003 Daytona amongst others), customize cars (51 Ford Pickup chopped channeled etc) , Scuba dive, sing Karaoke like a fiend and like to attend stuff like Burning Man.

I am a biker need I say more? Served as President of Ft. Worth Tx Chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) for 4 years, now serve as Road Captain for The Child Guardians. I ride bikes that's what I do when not reffing derby, watching derby, reading about derby, driving the league around in our league bus. All this cost money so I supliment my expenses by serving as a Site Manager for a 3rd Party Logistics company that contracts solely with Wal-Mart and Wal-Mart Logistics.

My biker buddies have called me Brass for the last 10-12 years it stemmed from my yahoo email addy which is BrassMonkey (Huge Beastie Boys Fan). So when I started in Derby I was the leagues coach/Referee and I was singled out as being a Hard Ass when it comes to calling penalties so the league starting calling me Hard Ass Brass and it kinda stuck.

I'm a level 70 demonology specced Warlock... No wait, that's not right.

I'm an Architectural Technician & computer modeller/animator for an architectural firm in Glasgow, Scotland. We mainly work on cinemas, but I never get a free pass or invites to premiers which I think is damned unfair.
I also deal with all the office's IT nonsense as I foolishly let them know I could do this when I started.

I had a Honda VFR800 (Interceptor in the US I believe), but some ^%*£!#? *%~+ faced mother^%*£!#? &@~+@\>$ (sorry) stole it in December. I have since bought a Kawasaki ZX7R and can't wait to get out on the bike as soon as I get time to tax it.

Occasionally, I like to play Warhammer with a friend or 2 (I have Dwarf, High Elf & Goblin/Orc armies). This hasn't happened for a while as I've been addicted to World of Warcraft, Guitar Hero & Rock Band. Cured now though.

I'm an academic advisor at the University of Kentucky.  I earned a bachelor's and a master's from Western Kentucky University back in 2005.  I play ultimate frisbee on a league in the summer.  I own an obscene amount of music and probably have a problem.  I read a lot, and I really mean a lot.  I am friends with JoeXCore and Nails and am into the same music and scene as them.  It's Joe's fault that I'm here, so blame him.

I'm unemployed.  I go thourgh this cycle where I work for a little while, then I have a nervous break down.  So I'm in the not-working & trying to not be afraid to apply for a job part of the cycle.  It's not going well.  But I have to do something, because my mom is supporting me & my derby habbit, not to mention my mental health related expenses (can't collect unemployment if I'm too sick to work, and I got turned down for disability - so apparently one is still able to perform work even if unable to remain focused & on task because one is having costant panic attacks).

I used to be a cartographer; that's the job I had for the longest time, & the one I studied for in college.  I spent five years making Rand McNally Streetfinders.  I'm always excited to read posts from those of you living in cities I've mapped.  And if anyone in the Charleston area has copies of the Rand products that were published during the Cooper River Bridge Project, I'll happily buy a copy off you (send a private message).

I used to also do some lifeguarding & swim instruction.  The pool gig in Minneaplis was OK, but oceanfront guarding at the Jersey Shore was the best.  Greetings to anyone in the LBI area!  That's where I first started using Fox-40s.  I <3 my Fox-40...  (Jersey Shore Empowerd Fox-40 of DOOM! +2 vs. teeth gnashing)

I'll stop now.  I talk too much.  Sorry.

The real world?  I am a coffee roaster Monkey, at some point I am coming out with a derby girl blend, unfortunately the owners had some issues with the tagline "Who wouldn't want to wake up to a little Derby Girl?".  I am working on getting a gig setting up computers, network, and test equipment for oil-sand pumping and environmental cleanup projects, and hoping that will give me more time to skate and write towards my eventual goal of being an unemployed screenwriter making more money than I ever had in my life, with less work, more frustration, and possibly something that seems like a reward.  Plus more skating time.

Hi. This is my first post. These forums are as amazing as Axl Rolls told me they were.

In the daytime, when I'm not surfing the web and reading about roller derby ... I'm an artist/illustrator/designer sort of seeking work these days.

Putting the starving back into starving artist. (I just got downsized from a job as a production artist that I had for the past year and a half the day after Thanksgiving). Guess that leaves me more time to draw comic books and children's books over the holidays.

:)

In fact, art is how I got involved in roller derby in the first place. Drawing flyers and posters for Dutchland and Wilmington. The derby community has so many great artists and creative people in it. So that's like this whole other bonus on top of totally falling for the sport and wanting to ref. S'been a great year this 2009. Even with downsizing.

Hi.

 ;D

I am a referee for the Dominion Derby Girls in Southeastern VA. Derby is a new passion, one I have invested myself in, but at five months in, I am a total n00b. I like cake. (random)

I am happy to have found this resource, I have so many questions and right now I am busting my rear to learn as much as I can for a thirtysomething mom.

Oh, in real life, I am a deputy sheriff. Enforcing stuffz is what I do naturally.

By Night: I am now into vinyl stickers for derby and heat press shirts, and booty shorts

Thank you Zebra Huddle in helping me lean more in depth about the rules.

I'm a CPA in the Tax Department of a large national company - my "tax season" is 365 days a year!  Hence my name and my registered # of 1040EZ.

I'm a single mom to 3 boys, the youngest 2 are dubbed Exemption 1 and Exemption 2.  Must be why I'm told by some of our girls that I called penalties 'like a mom'.    :)   guilt factor included for free.

I also do the taxes for our league and stats.  I dig paperwork.  I'm such a huge geek that I still have a landline and get the newspaper daily.

I would be first in line to buy some dark, brooding, ref coffee blend.   Where does the line form?

This is a wonderful, informative site and I really enjoy reading the differing viewpoints.

I somehow wound up as an assistant manager (manager in training) of a branch of one of the fastest growing text book retailers in the nation, Textbook Brokers.  We run independently of the campus bookstore (Barnes and Noble) and work with five more wholesalers than the competition.  Needless to say our books cost less and we can dish out more bones for book buyback at teh end of the semester.  It's not exciting, but it is nice to help students avoid the ridiculous costs and extras peddled by sales reps and the beast that is Barnes and Noble...plus I save money on my novels  ;D

I am an adult babysitter (supervisor) in the contracts department for a huge international medical supply company. Next time you're in the doctors office or emergency room look around - if you see any products that say Welch Allyn, Kimberly-Clark, Bayer, 3M - we most likely supplied them.

I throw knives, tomahawks competitively. I am an active member in the Clan Grant Society (Scottish Clan). I am working towards my black belt in Shotokan Karate (but that's a slooooow process since derby takes over my life!!!). I am also in school working towards my Bachelors in Business Management. I have a beautiful 1 year old baby girl (another reason why I am a ref, not a skater at the moment). I am also working on expanding my organic home garden.

Whew! ;D

I know it has been about 11 months since anyone has posted to this thread but here it goes

I am retired from the US Air Force after 20 years and 29 days and now work as a contractor on base as an Assistant Maintenance Operation Manager for the 2nd largest Medical Center in the Air Force. I am a happily divorced father of a spitfire 7 year old daughter. I have coached my squadron softball team to 7 base championships in softball and have coached my daughters 6 n Under tournament t-ball team which i am sure i will have to do again this year. I use to be a bouncer and was head of security when I left that, so derby reffing isn't much different except afterwards, the girls get together and have a few drinks and are still social. LOL. I got into reffing by our now Head Ref who use to bounce with me and I must admit, I am having a blast. I don't believe in doing anything half assed so I threw myself into learning as much about the sport and rules as I can. I have slowed down now, but I was reading the rule book at least twice a day for the first month. I am always striving to learn more and get as many different points of view on a subject to better myself. I know how it drove me up a wall to play competitive sports and have to explain the rules of the games to the refs/umpires/officials, so I am doing my best to not become one of those "donkeys". So if i ask for an explanation on here, please don't take it in a negative manner, just trying to see which angle you are looking at it from.

I've worked in design or advertising pretty much non-stop since for 16 years. My first job in high school was at a local classified paper, and it went downhill from there. That lead into ad agency work, web development, UI design and usability, etc.

The best part? I don't have a personal web site. Never have, probably never will.

As far as hobbies, for the last year or so it's been skating as much as I can. I'm also a beer nerd.

I work as a historical researcher for a consulting firm. As I like to put it, this means I get to see the country with my nose buried in dusty old records. Right now, I'm not traveling as much as I used to, but once they start sending me all over the place again, I'm going to have to get a new skate bag... :)

When I got involved with derby, a friend of mine said "because you needed another hobby?!" On top of the day job and derby, I write, run a craft business (scarywhitegirl.etsy.com (http://scarywhitegirl.etsy.com)), and play RPGs. And I'm planning a wedding for next summer. Luckily, my fiance was very understanding when I told him I had to wait for the season schedule before we could set a date. :)

I picked Jolly Dodge-Her because I've always been a fan of pirates & because I figured it was a little too cheesy to go with my actual nickname, which is Captain Ron.

By trade, I am a mechanical engineer.  I have worked for several companies in the past few years. I worked for a company the built large pumps for industrial & hvac applications, a company that made valves that went in Uncle Sam's war toys and currently working for a company that designs below the hook lifting devices for steel mills.

I also build & sell skates as a side business.  I only sell skates to people face to face, no internet or mail order stuff except for real basic parts. When I build skates, they are built to fit the skater and his/her needs, not to some generic size and fit chart.

I'm the Assistant Director for Administrative Services at a Rural, Critical Access Hospital.
(I write grants, oversee the website, sign marketing contracts, assist in all clinical needs for our 8 clinics and design all of our marketing materials.)
I'm also district Secretary of the South District Illinois Elks Association.
And the Chairperson for Relay for Life.
And completing my MBA this summer.
And in derby I am a board member, chair of PR/Marketing/Recruitment/Outside Event Booking/Ref & Nso accountability, and on training.
And there is a husband who I see every once in a blue moon through all of this.
(So rarely, in fact, that most of my league knows my Jeep's name (Hank) and not my husband's (Jeremy))

Oh and Major Wood - that Brad Paisley door is breathtaking! I LOVE woodwork!! (Totally grew up in a home construction/repair business.)

I recently (shortly after joining ZH) got a job as a wind turbine tech. I get to climb 300 foot tall, tubular steel towers to basically be a janitor. There's some mechanical work (usually involving a few hundred grams of grease or a few tens of liters of gear oil at a time) and some electrical work. But I do spend a lot of my day cleaning things. I like it because I don't spend any time sitting at a desk; instead I'm climbing, fixing something that's broken, or attempting to prevent things from breaking. There is a surprising amount of paperwork for safety and contractual obligations, but the rest of the job makes up for that.

When not climbing tall, man-made things I homebrew beer. My latest batch is an oatmeal stout and my first attempt at a partial mash. I think it turned out really well and was much more on style than a lot of the things they produce at the local microbrewery (a 'hefewiezen' that tastes like a Belgian dubbel? Please). I am a beer snob.

I like to wander around on mountains, which makes Wyoming a great place to be despite some of the natives. Derby is only just starting to take root here, so I spend perhaps more weekends than I should traveling the state to help out new leagues.

I'm a Safari Tour Guide at an Open Range Zoo (I drive utes full of people around Rhinos and Giraffes and other such animals)

The worst thing is when I get asked what I study to work at a Zoo, because when I'm not working at the Zoo I tour with bands and do merch/tour management/publicity/promo/production/tour logistics - the only music industry thing I *haven't* done is live mixing.

The look on kids faces when I have to tell them I have a BA In Music Industry hilarious - but not as funny as the teachers who are trying to get all of these kids to go to Uni and Study the "smart" things to study.

In reality, The music industry is just a different type of Zoo, you just switch out grumpy rhinos with drunk musos...
