Title: ... And we're back!
Post by: Major Wood on August 23, 2012, 09:09:25 pm
Huge apologies for the long outage, but we're back up and running! A lot of major changes have been made to prevent further problems. Here's what has happened over the last week and a half (give or take):

Forum software upgraded to 2.0.2 from 1.1.16. This gives us more modern features and better security built in.
Moved servers from shared hosting to a VPS solution. The malware problems we had before may have been caused by someone else who had a site hosted on the same server (we were unable to trace the source). Our new VPS solution offers more seclusion from other sites and allowed us to build out the server specifically for the needs of ZH. This should all mean better security, speed and less downtime.
All unnecessary software installations were removed from the server, which creates less weak points in the system.

All of this provides us with some great new features. Some were features that you have gotten used to on Zebra Huddle, others are brand new. You may find that you have to redo certain things in your profile, like your avatar. Many avatars would not load and may have taken several extra days to recover. Everyone will need to update their officiating history as those custom fields are now built into the forum software and can be searchable. As always, please let me know if you find something that isn't as you expected it to be.

We also have a new system for moderation, so there is a clear task list for moderators. By using the “Report to moderator” link at the bottom right of each post, you can let us know that there is a problem. That is the best way to let us know about a topic that needs to split/brought back on track, someone who is being abusive, spam, etc.
Also, look for the + and – buttons in each post. It's a quick and easy way to say that you agree, or disagree, with a post without having to clutter up a thread with posts that don't add to the conversation. Of course, we still have Grand Slams and Majors, if you wish to leave a comment on what you liked or didn't like about a post.
There are many other features that will help things work better behind the scenes.

In short, Zebra Huddle is coming back stronger than ever.

One last thing. Because this has been a huge inconvenience to everyone, I'm giving a discount to ALL items in the store. For the next 2 days, use the coupon code ZH is back! at checkout for 10% off your entire purchase.

When adding your league affiliation in your profile, it appears you cannot make that linkable. Correct or user error? Leaving mine as it is as an example.

I think I see. That screws up the league affiliation search wouldn't it.

Test - Nope. Still seems to work.

Yes. It wouldn't be searchable if there is any form of code in there.

Missed ZH. A bunch. That is all.

The "ZH Classifieds" link over on the left side doesn't appear to work anymore.

Both issues should be corrected.

Thank you.

Welcome back. And nice choice to go with what looks like prgmr :) I've had good results from them in the past.

To head it off, I know that the rules quotes are not currently working. That is a modification that I wrote for the 1.x line of the forum software. I'm currently writing a revision for the 2.x line. Hope to have that available very quickly.

This should be fixed. I haven't yet made this feature into a mod that can be downloaded and installed on another SMF 2.x forum, but I plan to in the future.

Referring specifically to the +/- buttons - I can see the post score (which, when you hover over it, brings up a question mark and explains the concept also), but no +/- buttons on each post. Not that it's a huge/immediate issue...

Thank you. That should be fixed now.
It was a permissions issue. Appeared to be fine for me, as admin. Hadn't occurred to me that it would be turned off by default for other members.

You should now see + and - buttons on each post that is not your own. Please let me know if that isn't the case.

There doesn't seem to be a field on the profile page for number of bouts worked as an NSO.

Hi

Don't know if this has anything to do with the outage last week, but the NSO documents by Gravity Kills all seem to be corrupt. I've tried viewing/printing them from a couple of different systems, and none work.

Little help?

There were some issues with downloads during the server move.

I'll try to work on both after work today.

While in there, I have an aesthetic request if you can. Just reordering the info to be a grouped together different and be a bit easier at a glance. Unless that messes up the data...

Yep. That's already on my list. Haven't done it yet because SMF doesn't allow you to re-order those fields. There is a modification available for that, I just have to get around to installing it.

And.... While you are wrenching in that area, please consider the feature request so NSO positions receive a similar billing. ;)

Kthxbai!

PS: glad to see things up and more stable now, hope the hair grows back in soon.

While you're making suggestions, do you think I should follow the endorsements for NSO Cert? Or should I list out all the NSO positions (please say no to this one)?

This should be fixed. I tested a few files and they all appeared to work. Please let me know if you find any that are not working.

I've re-arranged the current fields and changed the Bouts total field to be Bouts total as a referee. I am not sure how to incorporate extra line breaks between fields, but will be looking into it. I'll add NSO specific fields after I receive some guidance on how that should look.

I will place a vote for by endorsement, with the fields being text fields, so the burden/opportunity is mine to be more explicit. Others' thoughts?

If it is more than just numeric, it will not be really possible to make it an item that can be searched for down the road.

Fully aware of the "why". :) And quite pleased that ZH's back up again. And know what a pain it is to dive into someone else's css mess, in an attempt to re-skin something. And I know you have more important things to be concentrating on, Wood.

It was just a drive-by comment. I'm developing new strategies on my end. Carry on.

Welcome to the club.  This is now my third with an identical layout/color scheme.  When I start making posts that sound like they have nothing to do with anything other than local crew business, you'll know why....  (But the picture of lanyards and of ZH whistles off to the right is a good hint.)

Multiple monitors

Tried that. Got mercilessly teased for looking like a total goober, dragging the other monitor around with my laptop. Plus the extension cord kept getting caught on things.

Oh good, so it's not just me.  I was so 'but the Emperor has no clothes!" but then thought it might be the by-product of accidently navigating to an inappropriate website or something.  Relieved it's not just me.  Hoping to see the red and black blue and white again someday.

Weird, somehow the default theme was changed back to the SMF default theme instead of the ZH theme.
It seemed awfully strange that people were getting confused.

Tapatalk App isn't connecting with ZH anymore - says ZHia restricting access.
As its the only App which worked with ZH I purchased it - be great if it worked again!
Thanks
