Title: Rolling Along The River 2009, October 10 & 11
Post by: The Gorram Reaver on October 01, 2009, 02:42:48 am
Sioux City Roller Dames of Sioux City, IA, are hosting a tournament on October 10 & 11.  It's not one of the big-ticket tourneys, but it's a great place for some newer refs to get some experience, or for some older hands to try out a new job.  There will even be a little merby action!  Saturday will be 11 bouts of action packed fun, so there will be plenty of ref work available for anyone who wants to come join us!

Anyone interested in coming to officiate is welcome to contact me directly, or sign up for the Google Group (http://groups.google.com/group/rolling-along-the-river-2009-officials (http://groups.google.com/group/rolling-along-the-river-2009-officials)).  The more the merrier!

We're also looking for NSOs, so if you don't skate, or want to take a weekend off from skating, come help out off skates!  We'd love to have you!

If you missed the TC Terrors men's derby team at Brawl of America, this is your chance to see them in action!

This sounds like fun.  I'd have to fly out if I attended.  Any Zebra Huddle regulars going to be there?  (speak up people)

Ironically, the most-posted is Shaggy from Rockford, who may or may not come out to join us Sunday-only after reffing in Dubuque Saturday night.

Several will be there who are ZH members but haven't been on much, including Buster Hyman & Em Power of North Star, and Sketti from Sioux Falls.

If it's easier/cheaper to get to MSP, I'm sure there'd be no problem hitching a ride from there to Sioux City with myself & Em Power.  My mom lives in South Minneapolis not to far from the airport, and I'd be happy to pick you up if you wanted to do that.  Em & I will be leaving the Twin Cities Saturday late afternoon/early evening when she gets done with work.

If you can't travel Friday, or can't travel early enough Friday to meet up with us in the Twin Cities, I would be singing & dancing for joy if you can be at the venue in Sioux Falls by 3:00 p.m. Saturday.  Bottom line, any help at all is appreciated, especially later in the day on Saturday or any time on Sunday because those are the times when I have the fewest refs available and/or want to try my best to be running full crews.

Have I mentioned you would be my personal derby hero if you came to ref with us?  Anyone willing to travel that far on short notice for a non-major tournament ROCKS!

We're still in need of refs, especially for games taking place later in the day on Saturday.

Total extra bonus?  Sioux City Roller Dames have been able to arrange free food for all skaters, refs, NSOs & volunteers working the tournament.  That's right, no need to leave the venue &/or spend money to get somethnig to eat.

Come hang in Sioux City this weekend & get to ref derby, too!

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it as I had already offered to help out at a bout a couple hours away.   :-\

Bishop, what good are you?  Haven't you and your scientist friends figured out a way to clone refs yet?   ;)

They have. It's just that the stripes keep coming out reversed. Black and white instead of white and black. Back to the drawing boards I guess.

Sidenote: Would that make them evil refs, or do you need a tiny goatee too?

They would be anti-refs. If placed on the same track as refs, it can result in a catastrophic explosion. And a lot of whistling.

Duncan, hasn't anyone ever told you to always take your whistle out of your mouth before you explode?  Seriously.  Where'd you learn etiquette & deportment?  ::)

I was trying to perfect my teleportation device by this weekend so that Sketti could use it to get between Sioux City & Sioux Falls in the mere blink of an eye.  Thought we could maybe even set it up so that one game's half-time is the other games first period, that way he can just ref everything.  But every time I try to send roller skates through the TP Device they come out as fuzzy bunny slippers.  Quiet & stealthy, but not very rolly.  And for some reason they always make me look shorter.  Back to the drawing board...

You mean there are non-evil refs?

::rubs his goatee menacingly::

Just back from Sioux City yesterday, and much fun was had by all.  There were a couple snafu's like in all bouts, but overall things went very smoothly, thanks to our fabulous head ref.  :)

A big thanks to the folks from Sioux City for organizing the tournament, and also to the Rage City girls for singing karaoke with me and Reaver till bar close on Sunday!

Oh, and um, hi.  First post from someone who usually lurks.

Hi back atcha!

It's funny... Now that I'm back on skates it seems that all the good opportunities for me to be a visiting ref are on the same weekend as one of my league's home bouts.

I am surprised Sketti didn't just hitch a ride from the nearest airport and parachute in.  I bet you could have got him to agree to take visiting refs for a drop or two as a bonus for coming out.  I actually considered trying to come but I had family business that just couldn't be put off.  He is a great ref and it sounded like a good time!

Seems like it was a busy weekend for a lot of leagues in the region.  Thanks so much to everyone who even considered coming to help out.

Sketti didn't do any jumps for us, but he did take one of the refs from Rage City (Anchorage, AK) up to Sioux Falls with him for the Naptown vs. Sioux Falls game.  One of the refs Sketti was supposed to have for that bout was unable to attend, so we gathered everyone & said "hey, who wants to go"?  Res Judaquada won the volunteer sweepstakes, and had a great time on his unexpected side trip to Sioux Falls.

And yes, Em Power is totally correct.  There is karaoke in Sioux City, IA, on Sundays, and we found it.  :)
