Title: Short Track "Roller Derby" at the Winter Olympics
Post by: Johnny Zebra on February 25, 2010, 04:48:45 pm
Interesting - note debate about "incidental" skate contact, as well as the writer's plug for derby as a summer Olympic sport . . .

Roanoke hosts Virginia's Commonwealth Games each year.
I'd love to see my league push for the addition of a roller derby tournament (there are a couple of good venues in the valley and I think we're going on 9 or 10 leagues in the state, so I'd think they should be able to attract at least 4 or 6 of them for this).
But I'm leaving it to the league to make the pitch.

Thanks for posting j.z.  I had read a related article about the incident and thought about posting it.  However, it did not have the plug for roller derby.

Bat, as believe I mentioned, I think that's an excellent idea.  In this case, I think we VA refs should combine our collective interleague connections and make sure the idea stays fresh in the minds of VA leagues.

Count me in Va, boys.  I don't think RCR would be able to resist...but like Bat said

Honestly, in my own experience, nothing of that scale has really occurred to most of the players I've talked to.  They tend not to see things quite as regionally as we refs do.  The smaller/newer leagues don't seem to have the vision or leadership to pull it off - yet.  When I mention it to players the response is, "Yeah, that's a great idea!" and nothing more.  My own league's involvement in it is immaterial to me.  I mean, my *opinion* is that I'd think it'd be good for them to be involved in, but what they decide to do or not do is their business.  And I say that as a league member who could vote on such a decision (I have league membership by default, not by choice.)  Regardless, that's not going to stop me from getting the word out and testing for interest when I'm hanging out with other leagues.  We are ambassadors of the sport after all.

See, now you've got me thinking.  We've hosted a WFTDA regional tournament here in Madison.  This year's North Central Regionals are taking place in Green Bay, hosted by Brew City Bruisers (Milwaukee).  There are now at least ten active leagues in Wisconsin, five of which are WFTDA member or apprentice leagues.  Perhaps it is time to talk to people about adding roller derby to the Badger State Games.

Interesting regarding what is considered a pass in short track vs roller derby.

Did you watch the women's 3000m relay?  It's like roller derby on knives!

And they all had panties on their helmets, but no stars or stripes. I whistled them all for illegal uniform IPs, but the jam continued for some reason.
