00 ... that's a number isn't it?
« on: February 21, 2011, 04:10:33 pm »
Is 00 an acceptable number in roller derby?

I thought it was.

But a skater just asked me if it was ... because they were informed via an e-mail that it is not an acceptable number for the tournament they are registering for.

That ... confuses me.

00 fits the rules for numbers in WFTDA.

And it's certainly a famously enough used number in other sports. Just ask David Reutimann, Kevin Duckworth, Jim Otto, and Martin Biron.

The e-mail said the skater's number was going to be reduced to just 0. And you know, I wouldn't curse anyone I know with the same number as Gilbert Arenas when he was Agent Zero. That's just mean.

Perhaps the skater was registering as a add on player to a team that already had a 00? That is the only conflict I could see.

From my understanding, if she were a chartered member of a WFTDA team registering for this event, her number would be allowed.  However, since she has registered as an individual skater, without that charter, her number must meet the tournament's requirements for being placed on a random team.

From what I understand the number 00 causes havoc with the stats book, of course that's not a reason to disallow the number.

I believe this conversation came from a multi-bout event with some pick up games. In those pick-up games they decided to disallow 00

There is an extra comment in the stats book that the player number fields are text formatted for the case of a preceding zero and you can use a workaround to type the letter O instead.

Had 00 on both teams last week, as well as 0704 for another preceding 0. Stats book worked fine. Little exclamation flags pop up when you enter a "strictly numbers" number, like 1234, to warn that "a number is stored as text", as Riff pointed out. Excell thinks you might want it to be stored as a number, but you don't. Store it as text. They mean nothing, these little flags. Other than that, it worked fine for me.
