Hip-Whipping into Opposing Blocker, Multi Player Block?
« on: September 01, 2010, 04:44:42 am »
A skater and I had a disagreement at practice regarding a hip-whip, and whether it would be considered a multiplayer block if the hip-whipping player did not let go of her teammate while blocking an opposing player.

The scenario:
Two Red Players are skating front-to-back, and Blue Player is attempting to skate by them. Rear Red Player grabs Front Red Player, hip-whips into Blue Player, hip-checking the Blue Player (either to prevent position gain, or to cause loss of position by knocking her down or out of bounds).

The skater says that it's a multiplayer block; and I disagreed.

I believe that there was no illegal action due to:
[rule]6.7.4 The multi-player link must be that which is blocking or impeding an opponent for the action to be illegal.[/rule]

In this scenario, my interpretation is that it's not the link that is blocking, it's the Rear Red Player's hip that is doing the blocking, regardless of whether the Rear Red Player is still grabbing her teammate. (I would imagine, if the Rear Red Player threw the hip-whip too early, and ended up "clotheslining" the approaching Blue Player, then it would be a MPB because the link did the blocking, instead of the failed attempt at a hip-check.)

The skater says that she's been called on it in prior games, where it was explained as illegal by the issuing referee. (I'm also inclined to listen well to this skater, since she is very knowledgeable about the rules and how to apply them, and has stood in as a ref in some occasions!)

But I'm imagining that the prior game was the earlier rule set that did not include the verbiage above, and thus the penalty would probably stand up (i.e. in the scenario, a wall was formed, and one player grabbed a teammate, and executed a block. Penalty based on impact). In the current, May 26, 2010 rule set, I would say there is absolutely no illegal action, since the linkage is not the blocking mechanism.

Am I reading this wrong, and does the mere fact that they ARE linked, and the block occurred because of that link, that this scenario would be a MPB?

How would this be called?

If they were still linked when the initial impact of the block was made then yes I would call MPB depending on the outcome of the block.

The "Link" Has to be what is impeding play, and it has to be a 'grab' or 'hold' by at least one of the multi skaters.

Simply taking a whip off of a teammate and not releasing as you block isn't a MPB.

Now, if they were attempting a whip, still were holding onto each other and an opponent tried to skate 'through' the link. Yes MPB..

This was a common misunderstanding under the older rules, which is why it was clarified by the Rules Committee and then incorporated into the current rules.

No penalty.

Thank you all for clearing that one up. Was a little odd having a discussion with a skater and *I* was arguing that there was no penalty. :)  hehehe

What if the person doing the block would have not been able to hit the oopposing team if not for the hipwhip. Therefore the link/hipwhip is what cause the block?

The type of hit described is commonly referred to as a pendulum hit. Using a teammate for stabilization and momentum.  ;)
