but now - since ANYONE can assign these points, these points are being given and taken away by people who arent necessarily correct about a particular post

This is something I am hoping to correct with monitoring the stats sheet and requiring a reason. With the modification that allows these logs, it allows me to deny certain users access to giving grand slams and majors. I will do this if there is some sort of abuse.

out of interest - how's the monitoring going to work?
what criteria are you going to use to determine inappropriate use?

I will basically be looking for either things that do not look right at all, or unusual trends. Anything that might set off flags in my mind.
As far as inappropriate use, I have been thinking a lot about this (not just the stats sheet, but inappropriate use of the website as a whole). I have some ideas that I'm kicking around in my mind. I'm going to need to install a few things to make some of my ideas happen. I'll also need to write up a policy (which will happen right after I come up with one).
So listen up for those details in the near future.

I'm doing everything I can to ensure that the discussions here remain very high quality. A lot of that means keeping all of you happy with being here. Whatever policy I come up with will be a proposal to the community here. If you have suggestions to add to that policy (or something that is really bothering you about it), you'll be able to.

this is what i think too - for what it's worth

at first i thought it was a great idea - since one of the things people struggle with in the yahoo group is who they should listen to. seemed this karma point idea might give some indication on who knows their stuff

but now - since ANYONE can assign these points, these points are being given and taken away by people who arent necessarily correct about a particular post

not to mention, just because a heap of people think the same about something doesnt mean they're right

i really like the idea too, but i'm probably not going to assign these points anymore

out of interest - how's the monitoring going to work?
what criteria are you going to use to determine inappropriate use?

Majored for asking questions!  ;)

I do want to say that since I started requiring a reason for giving a major or a minor, everyone has properly utilized the system (I'm not speaking to before that was required, because I don't have the data).
For any of you who might be questioning how to properly use the stats sheet, I'll provide some of the reasons that have been used to give grand slams (not pointing out names, but all of these examples are excellent.)
