Are all ghost points going away?
« on: September 02, 2011, 04:13:00 pm »
... or is it just the "N" code on the score sheet that we're no longer supposed to worry about?

The score sheet lists five different kinds of points: Blocker in the box, Jammer in the box, Jammer Lap, Out of play, and Not on the track.

Section 8.5 of the rules explicitly calls out the penalty box and didn't-make-it-to-the-track-on-time points as "not on the track," leaving jammer lap and out-of-play points to be defined elsewhere.

Out of play points are defined in 8.6.3.1, which includes the words "on the track."  Jammer lap points are defined in 8.6.6, and in the glossary ... with a non-existent cross-reference, to explain the exception if the opposing jammer is off the track.

The new standardized practice doc says:

[rule]
Not on the Track Point Recording

What process should a Scorekeeper use to determine
"Not on the Track" (NOTT) points?

The NOTT points should not be a captured. No differentiation is needed as long as
the score reflects the actual points scored[/rule]

Which does this mean?

A) Scorekeepers should stop tracking all ghost points.  Just get the totals right.
B) Stop tracking "not on the track" points as defined by 8.5.  Continue tracking jammer lap and out of play ghost points.
C) Stop tracking "not on the track" points as defined by the tracking sheet.  Continue tracking blocker in the box, jammer in the box, jammer lap and out of play points.

The only change here is in the paperwork.

The only change here is in the paperwork.

The only change here is in the required paperwork for WFTDA interleague and tournament bouts.

There. Fixed that for you.

For your home, and non-WFTDA regulation or sanctioned bouts, you may still do what you want, use custom versions of the paperwork, and so on.
You will bout as you practice.

I think Isaac and I may be on the same page here.  That is, what is WFTDA going to expect from us when we submit stats from sanctioned bouts?

Option A.  Record pass point total information with no data to differentiate which points were earned "normally" and which points were earned as "Not On The Track", "Jammer Lap", "Out of Play", or "Box (Jammer or Blocker)" points.  Your score data will show a bunch of numbers, and that's it.

Just my two cents... I've told my scorekeepers about the change in their responsibilities with this new document.  I have a bout tomorrow and I plan to fill the NOTT point cells in the Excel file with solid black before printing them.  It's not data so won't affect the file's programming and will probably visually make things easier for the NSO.  I'll also probably remove the instructions regading the NOTT point recording from the bottom.

Thank you both, that totally answers my question.  And Ketterman, that's an awesome idea.  I won't be printing stats books for about five more months, but if there's not a new release before then incorporating these changes, I'm stealing your idea.  Thanks!

Major, FNZ: Yes, of course -- I knew the points were still to be scored, and I was just asking about paperwork.  But, in asking for clarity, I should have been more clear, myself.  :-)

SilkenTofu: Yup.  That's exactly what I was asking.

Reaver: Shiny!  :-)  That's exactly the answer I was hoping to get.  It's easier for all concerned.

Thanks again, gang!
