So, what do you do in your "other" life?
« on: March 10, 2009, 06:04:03 pm »

I thought it might be interesting... When you're not making friends and influencing people on the track, what do you do?

Me?  I'm a Security Incident Handler.  I do forensic examination of electronic evidence, malware reverse engineering, penetration testing (the best job title in existence) and some code hackery.

In my other other life I do comedy.  Mostly improv, some stand-up.

In my other other other life I do sound engineering for local theatres.

This is as good a thread as any to remind people that if they haven't done it already,  to put their league affiliation and such in their signature tag or sidebar info (both in your profile info), so people can not only know what you do in your other life, but specifically where you do what you do in your ref life. It's good info to know for reference purposes, outreach, socializing, travel, etc.

Wow, I'd like to share with the forum on this subject ... but it might compromise my secret identity so I am going to have to refrain from such a trivial indulgence.

In my day job, I'm a mild-mannered inconspicuous clerk for a pharmaceutical company - the perfect cover for a roller derby ref.  :D   Part of the reason I got into derby is because I'm nursing some persistent injuries which prevents me from training in MMA.  Also, any excuse to get me on wheels is a plus.  I love the sport and am anxiously anticipating my copy of "Hell on Wheels" which is due to arrive any day now.

I am not sure if I want to share ;)
e.g. if some of the girls in my league knew I play (amongst other things) bass in in a funk band.. I'd lose a lot of hard earned respect ("funk? yuck!") I also play upright bass, that is the half of the story I do tell them...
since music doesn't pay my bills I work as a graphic/web-designer//project/event-manager in a design agency. so if you need help with your website... please ask someone else ;)

I'm a Inactive Ready Reserve member of the USAF, an AMMO Troop.
And currently a 3A Computer Operator for the Army Air Force Exchange Service, Which is a fancy title for "I keep track of making sure the things we sell get counted/inventoried, in our computer system, and the rest of the time I work as a Key holding Floor Manager.

I'm also a Drummer in a Bagpipe and Drums band, a Middle Eastern percussionist and Dancer, avid Karaoke guy, and a I play Amtgard.

Though for the most part, my non-working hours are spent mainly on Derby/Reffing, and 1day a week on pipe band stuff.

Oh and I like Ren Faires, Me balancing a bottle on my head for fun..

Hunter is speechless?  I am surprised :)

In my other life I do corporate espionage work, mainly tracing the path of intellectual property from a patent to a product, primarily for the courts.

And I supplement that with restorations of vintage Vespa and Lambretta motorscooters, experimental cooking and learning pedal steel guitar.

"I collect spores, mold, and fungus."

Hell yeah Bronco, we gotta ride when you come down for Westerns!  What bike(s) you got?
I work at Sportique Scooters, new and vintage bikes, parts, and repair.
I work at the British Bulldog pub as the door guy a few nights a week.
I too ride vintage scooters, though I wouldn't necessarily call them "restorations".  As if scooters weren't dorky enough, I am a proud member of the Jedi Knights Scooter Club (You can't spell Jackass w/o JKSC)
I DJ whenever I got a gig.
I'm looking for a teaching job now that I have removed most of the pics of myself in drag from the internets.
I am an absentee landlord for a property I'm stuck with back in MI.
I recently bought one third of a '72 Porsche 914 that myself and the other 2/3 owners will be learning to rally race in.  It shouldn't be a stretch as I am a retired cab driver.
I'm scared of heights, republicans, and sharks in any body of water bigger than a pool.

I used to be the vocalist for a few hardcore punk rock bands... my default pic is from a show I played with one of my bands. I pretty much gave up being in bands for derby, that used to be a big focus for me and once derby took over my life it's now pretty far down on the list. Nails my ass. head (that's assistant head ref) and I are talking about starting another band, I'm sure we'll get on that soon. We'll schedule that around our derby.

I am also the academic challenge coordinator for Harrison Elementary in Lexington. I call the team the HEAT (Harrison Elementary Academic Team).

When I'm not working with the academic team my regular days are spent with first, second and third grade highly structured classroom. We have 4 teachers and ~10 kids in this classroom.

I usually bowl every Sunday, have for about 6 years, since my broken foot is a problem I've missed the last month or so.

Nails and I are also each have of the Lexington Punk directory, people are constantly calling some combination of the 2 of us for phone numbers. If I don't have the number she does and vice versa. There are people who only have our phone numbers memorized because apparently it's easier to call us then to write it down or save it in some sort of electronic device.

In my other life I am the Production Control Manager for a supplier in the auto industry.  Before that I was in Engineering (same company) for 14+ years (I have a BSME from Ohio State).

In my other life I am the proud father of 2 girls, age 8 and 11.  I am starting to realize I may not be smarter than a 5th grader. :o

I secretly like to write and a couple years ago wrote bout recaps for UWeekly.  I also drum for relaxation and enjoy working on/ fixing computers.
