Alternate Referee Procedure
« on: April 25, 2011, 06:16:23 pm »
As long as I've been staffing bouts, I have always had an alternate referee in case one of the first string crew is hurt, has equipment malfunction, etc. I've also always had this person doing some kind of NSO job.

Never having had to actually use an alternate until Saturday night, I realize now this isn't the best idea when I had to run around looking for a replacement score keeper because that's what my referee alternate had been doing.

Due to this, I'm going to be doing the following from now on: The alternate referee is not going to be doing an NSO job. I would like to have this person seated near the score board table (so I can find him/her) partially geared up. I'd like him/her to have skates and all protective gear on (helmet optional while seated) with his/her ref jersey with him/her but not on. That way, if the alternate is needed, he/she can be on the track in seconds and there won't be a need for an official timeout. How's that sound?

I would like pros and cons to this if anyone can think of any.  I'd also like to know if any other leagues have a similar procedure.

I have my alternate serve as an announcer referee. For anyone who is not familiar with that role, all they do is listen in on what referees are talking about during official timeouts/reviews and tell the announcer what is going on (they don't actually talk into a mic ever). If I need to use them, we just lose the announcer ref position.

I did a double header where we had an alternate working penalty box... and she had an alternate that wa the announcer referee.

If you have the alt doing a job that must be done then you must also have an alternate for that person.

We ended up needing the alternate... but only between games.

We use an alternate ref, never know of a last minute emergency that might arise. We have our sub ref stay in the VIP section so they can keep an eye on the game and can see if a ref goes down. We will call the OTO for the medics to tend to the ref and at that time they are already getting dressed. We will go with 2 OPR's until they are ready to join the Herd. No sense in killing gameplay momentum for an injury.

They did alternate refs at the Clover Cup.  We sat in a chair, fully geared, near the penalty box area.  Once the alt went in due to an equipment malfunction on a skating referee, to prevent a game delay.  Once the malfunction was repaired, he returned to his seat.  The rest of the times, we were used to escort skaters to the locker room when they were expelled.
