Ref stoping to call a major
« on: September 22, 2011, 06:27:42 pm »
So last night at a scrimmage I was front pack, there was a baxj pack and one jammer ref, thats it, I saw a low block major easy, both skaters went down and oob after the low block, I called it, and stoped, the skater didnot hear it so I called her by name and called agian, the head ref, then told me to not stop, never stop, so should you stop to give the major
to the death of fun

If the head ref tells you not to... You keep skating! Having said that, if I make a major penalty call, it's my responsibility to get that skater off the track. If I'm doing just that, I expect the other refs to cover my "territory" for that time. I've worked with plenty of other IPRs, and we always cover for one another as needed.

...we always cover for one another as needed.

And this is a perfect situation to apply that. The fallen player has presumably moved to the back of the pack, so the Rear IPR should be hearing your shouted calls in her general direction. When she gets up & rejoins the pack, he should easily be able to send her off before she participates further. FWIW, that should've been his explanation to you as to why he wants you not to stop. "Never stop" alone is useless advice.

I've just run a bootcamp for brand new refs and one of the most important things I stressed was inter ref communications. This is very similar to the examples I used where one ref has to leave their post to deal with something.  As long as you let the other refs know that they should be covering then there is no reason why you can't stop to remove a player from the track.
