what does your league play and why and/or what is your opinion about it?
How long are the breaks between periods at your home bouts?

The majority, if not all, sanctioned WFTDA bouts are now three TWO periods. It's been literally years since I reffed a three-period bout.

It also makes no sense for a balanced switch off of jam refs to have three periods.

The last three-period bout I reffed was more than a year ago. Besides the issues with switching off jammer refs, three-period bouts are a bout-production headache if there's a halftime act. Put halftime between periods 1 and 2, and it doesn't really serve its purpose because people aren't really tired yet; put it between periods 2 and 3, and they're TOO tired. (On that note, I'm kinda glad we don't really do halftime acts in Baltimore, because not doing them has shown me how superfluous they are.)

Johnny,

Was the intent to say three twice here?

We have 2 30 minute periods at interleague bouts with a 15 minute intermission in between. For intraleague, we were doing 3 15 minute periods with 15 minute intermissions in between (very limited rosters meant shorter game play to keep things safe).

Right now it's optional to have 20 or 30 minute periods, but it has become a standard among WFTDA leagues to play 30 minute periods, so I would highly suggest your league follows suit.

it is not about my league (we never did anything but 2 periods). I just got the info for the Berlin bout in 2 weeks (their first), that they are doing 3. which made me think (why would they do that?)
I know that the London Rollergirls do 3 periods, when I watched a bout there they rotated with 3 refs as jammer refs to prevent them from doing 2 periods for one team.

It's probably for smokers, so they can go outside twice... and for selling more beer... (however LRG don't sell beer at their bouts).

I'd welcome if a future ruleset just gets rid of the hockey periods. It's simply one thing less to discuss between leagues.

We do 2/30 minute periods with 15 mins. (sometimes 20 mins) in between.

Dixie Derby found 2/30min periods were easier for production purposes. It keeps the jam ref trade even & our crowd likes there being less downtime (we did a fan survey the season we switched).

OHRG does 2-30's as well with a 15 minute half.  Personally I hate the extra break in a 3 period bout.  The last one I did was in a venue with no AC on a 95 degree day and the fire department had burned down a house close by so there was some smoke and ash still in the building.  BY the 2nd intermission most everyone was tuckered out and the quality of play suffered- as I recall I ejected my first player on too many majors in a period that day...

2-30's just seem to flow alot better IMHO and the fans like it better too.

As I recall Maine did 3 periods for their first two seasons, then switched to 2 last fall and haven't looked back. I think everyone was glad they did - what I'm not sure of is why they went with 3 in the first place. They'd have a band play during one intermission, and 'kids games' during the other. The second intermission always seemed to end up with a lot of people milling about waiting for the action to start up again.

Does anyone out there play 3-periods and prefer it? What are the advantages I'm not thinking of?

With our league we run 2 x 30 with a 15 min half time break which gives players and ref's a chance to discuss the prior period with a quick meeting. It also keeps the adrenalin levels high and doesnt let the crowd sit around to long.

We use 2/30 with a 15 min intermission. The first two and a half years were 3/20s. 2/30s is so much easier and it shortens the bout length by 15 min. I've seen crowds dwindle going in to the 3rd period. Now the crowds seem to stay longer. I still ref an occasional 3 period bout. The head ref there likes to switch jam refs halfway through the 3rd period, also alternating the first and second, which I think catches the jammers off guard when the jam refs are switched mid period.

The last 3 period bout I saw, was a bout where in between the 2 periods they held a 'exhibition' 2 period mini-game.

20 min game A.

10-15 min game b(exhibition)

20 Min Game A part 2.

10-15 min game b 2( end of game 2)

20 Min final Game A

That being said, I still prefer 2-30 minute periods.

The only thing a 3-period bout has going for it is increased beer sales :D

And since many new leagues barely cover their venue rental with ticket sales, 3-periods makes a lot more money.

Agree with JZ on the jam ref parity

We also usually do 2-30's(My preference) with a 20-30 minute break, but this past weekend held a 3-20's bout with 20 minute breaks. We did this solely because it was a charity event and we were holding raffles during the first break and announcing winners from a silent auction during the second. And come to think of it...We DID sell out of beer for the first time in a while this bout!
Even if you only play five minutes of the game, be there...and be accountable.
