WFTDA IBRF Skater Number Sort Order
« on: December 14, 2011, 04:48:29 am »
Recently I have taken over the position of Head NSO. I am hearing a couple of different ways people feel the Skater Numbers should be sorted on the IBRF. I personally thought that it should be in numerical order ignoring all letters (I think it may even say something similar in NSO Handbook I DL'd from ZH). However, I was told this evening that there is some other "strange" order that WFTDA prefers that is something like plain numbers first, then numbers that start with letters.

I thought it should be...

ZER0
A1A
6FT
7
008
9ER
B30
4X4
RT44
79
101
977
1478
7030

Or should it be...

6FT
7
008
9ER
4X4
79
101
977
1478
7030
ZER0
A1A
B30
RT44

Or some other way?

Beaten by Major Wood, edits made appropriately....

Treat the player numbers as using a 36-character set that is organized: 0, 1, 2, ... 8, 9, A, B, ... Y, Z.  This means that if officials are verbalizing each character of a player's number individually, you can easily find a number by looking for it in the order the characters appear.  This following list is sorted this way (as is Major Wood's), and the way each of these player numbers would be vocalized by officials is [in brackets]:

008  [zero, zero, eight]
101  [one, zero, one]
1478  [one, four, seven, eight]
4X4  [four, ex, four]
6FT  [six, eff, tee]
7  [seven]
7030  [seven, zero, three, zero]
79  [seven, nine]
977  [nine, seven, seven]
9ER  [nine, ee, are]
A1A  [ay, one, ay]
B30  [bee, three, zero]
RT44  [are, tee, four, four]
ZER0  [zee, ee, are, zero]

If you want to automate this alphabetical sort, and want to avoid Wood's easy mistake of shaving off the leading zeros... In a blank spreadsheet, highlight a column and set the Cell Format to "Text" (instead of the default "General"). Now when you type in "008", it will keep the leading zeros & not turn it into "8". And the sort button should now say "Sort A to Z" (not "Sort Smallest to Largest"). That puts 008 at the top, where it belongs, instead of between the 7s & 9s.

And Traeonna, general tip: Don't fall into any lazy "ignore letters" trap. As long as the rules allow them as part of the 4-character distinguishing charter number, we must use them everywhere (forms, whiteboards, shoulders, large-print on backs).

Just a note: while it may not "matter" what order skaters are listed on the IBRF, it will make your life WORLDS easier if that matches the whiteboard.  The penalty tracking sheets will match the IBRF (it auto-populates), and it makes it quicker to compare the whiteboard to their sheets if they're in the same order.  And I speak from experience: you don't want your penalty sheets in a different order than the IBRF when you're inputting the data.  Just don't do it.  It's no fun.

Ah, see now that makes more sense (how it's vocalized by Refs). I've heard so many different ways of sorting as I mentioned (including the ignore numbers...which made little sense as the rules set allows for alphanumeric numbers), so it was really unclear to me what the correct way was and I was failing at finding what I wanted in the rules set (as I wasn't looking for list on penalty board at the time). This makes WAY more sense now. I appreciate you all taking the time to explain the method and the reason behind that method. I'm somewhat of a paperwork perfectionist, so I like having things correct. This helps out greatly.  :D

I was about to say - it's not a requirement to enter them into the IBRF in WFTDA-sort order, but it's a pain in the butt when people don't do it. So don't be that guy, please.

Also, depending on software versions, phases of the moon, etc... you may need to "force" something to be text by doing:
="2/11"

Excel tip: Putting a ' (single quote, apostrophe) in front of data will cause it to be treated as text.

Excel Lotus123 VisiCalc tip: Putting a ' (single quote, apostrophe) in front of data will cause it to be treated as text.
Fixed that for you! :)  (Yes, it really goes back that far.)

Luckily I TEACH Excel classes, so it wasn't an issue with me not understanding how to sort or whatnot, but rather the logic behind how the numbers were to appear. :) The most helpful bit here...explaining the whole, 0-9 A-Z vocalized, made all the world of a difference. I'm fortunate in the fact that this first bout is an intra-league bout, so if something is a bit wonky, it can be identified and learned from so next month things will be where they should.

Cite, please? It's possible that ZH is not the correct forum for a discussion on what constitutes "an alphabetic character", but I bristled at the use of "wonky".
