Jammer mistakenly in the box
« on: March 09, 2012, 01:56:50 am »
Since no one else wants to do the first post honors, I guess I'll share some embarrassment from our last bout.
I was Jam reffing, and amongst a small flurry of penalty calls my jammer drops into a seat in the box (we were almost directly across from it). I didn't call a penalty on her, but as she was on the far side of the track from me it seemed entirely possible that an outside pack ref had given her a major. I immediately asked the penalty tracker whether she had gotten the penalty- nope. Then since the head ref was next to me I asked him- no. Then I tried to get a hold of the OPRs. About the time I had consensus that no one had called her off, the jam ended.
Turns out, when the IPR called a penalty on Blue 13, my jammer Blue 12 thought it may have been directed at her, and since she didn't want to make another lap, sat in the box. I never saw her give me a questioning look, though I was obviously more focused on talking to the other refs. Point of the story, my jammer sat in the box for about 45 seconds for no reason because I couldn't wouldn't make the call to bring her back in.

I have this happen to me and I did not do as well as you, I called my jammer (color # penalty) for a minor penalty, other majors were called and the jammer went to the box, she was seated in the box and I waved her back on the track, after the jam ended one opr informed me that she did in fact commit a major (and seperatly the minor I called),

So I think you did well, asking all other refs and nsos, being sure that she is in the box for a reason, (sometimes skaters just go for no reason),

Our ref team is getting "loud", calling minors and big, high hand signal on the outside, it great for us but some skater hear one whistle and go to the box, cover loud minors with out a whistle are not majors in the captains meeting, and call just as loud at a scrimmage,
to the death of fun

As an aside, there used to be a lot longer thread here, but I think it got spring cleaned.

Nope.  It's still there.  Wood has just created a new section of the forum where we can create threads that are topic-specific, which helps facilitate topic searches, rather than posting all types of mistakes/problems in a single thread that is now 30 pages worth of discussion covering a great number of individual topics.
