Pack isn't here
« on: March 25, 2012, 01:56:55 am »
I had a SHOCKER bout last night.

tripped over my own feet; out of position; slow to respond to changes in pack speed.... ugh

As seems to be the norm, teams line up in front of the jammer line with one team on knees and one team not.
Team who is not down moves to the pivot line - and the jam starts.
Refs call "no pack".
I call "pack is here" when the down team stands up.
Except there was no pack... the two teams were more than 20' apart.

Even worse is I did this TWICE.
Shocker.

Let those amongst us who hasn't had a bad night cast the first stone.

The trick is to not have one of them two nights in a row, Mick. ;)
You will bout as you practice.

I know the feeling Mick!  I blew the "pack is here" call in scrimmage this week when I failed to realize the black player I saw in the "pack" was actually their jammer.  I had all the veteran players confused.  I just told them to pretend that I messed up and move on ;).

In a practice scrim there were four white standing and two black on a knee and two black standing and all eight were just in front of jammer line. The two black standing skated forward slowly at the first whistle and I was intently watching for them to clear 10' in order to call no pack. I failed to notice the other two rise before the no pack so when I called 'No Pack" the other IPR called "pack is here" as he noticed that the two had risen. Luckily due to a very astute NSO and the observant IPR, the jammer whistle was not blown on my no pack. It was clearly my tunnel vision in watching so intensely for them to clear 10' that lead to my failure to notice the two rise.  :-[

I think a lot of us are starting to develop some unfortunate muscle memory with these starts.  I called "No Pack" at the jam start in a sanctioned bout recently, when all the Blockers were standing together.  So I immediately started going, "Sorry!  Ahhh sorry!"  Not the most dignified behavior for the Head Ref.  ::)

I have also called "Pack is here" a few times at practices (and maybe bouts too) without waiting for the pack to reform, in cases like Mick described when they're actually positioned apart.  It's amazing how automatically it comes out of one's mouth after certain patterns are established in a bout!

Taking half a beat to think about what I'm saying at the jam start has become something I'm consistently working on.  Sounds like I'm not the only one.

The best thing we can all do is keep our brains constantly, actively engaged in what's going on.  When teams are lining up, especially when there have been a lot of No Pack starts, I like to get a real-time critical analysis going in my head of 'What the pack status would be if the whistle blew right now.'  It gets my brain working on the issue of pack definition to help keep me from automatically sliding in to the reflex of calling No Pack right after the whistle just because they've done in the last fifteen times in a row.

Of course, some times I still miss and say it any way.
