I'm actually applying to these (to NSO)! Coming all the way across from Australia for the first time, and making a four week long trip out of hitting up all four regional tournaments :)

It's kinda exciting...

This seems as good a place as any to ask this, be up for getting people's advice on this.

I'm based in the UK, but hopefully going to be in the States for a month or 2, starting from October 13th, and would be very keen to NSO (or at least volunteer in some fashion) at Championships in November.

Looking at the application, it says if you're applying to officiate at Championships you need to apply to one or more of the regional tournaments. Unfortunately, as much as I'd like to this isn't going to work with my travel dates. Would it be worth applying for Championships anyway, explaining the situation, or is this requirement non-negotiable? Would it be good idea to get in contact with someone beforehand and get an answer one way or another (if so, who would be the person to contact)?

It's not the end of the world if I can't apply (can still go watch 'em at least), but would be cool to try and get that extra experience while I'm out there. Thanks!

You usually aren't allowed to work Champs without having worked a Playoff tournament, but it can't hurt to to tell them your situation and ask!  I would email refcert_east@wftda.com.  The Referee Certification Panel are the ones who handle applications, and the East is considered the region for everyone outside North America.

If you can't NSO, you could probably get on the Stats crew, if that's something you'd be interested in.  I'm not sure who handles Stats for the Big 5 these days, but I bet Ref Cert would be able to point you in the right direction.

If you have a sterling resume as an official in the positions you're applying for, there's always a chance.  I can honestly say it may not be a good chance, but I wouldn't say unequivocally non-negotiable.

Yep, stats is my 'if I'm not selected' choice, followed by 'running around getting water bottles for people' (otherwise known as 'seriously I just want to be involved!').

I'm going to harass *ahem* request the Test Via Skype for my AFTDA Certification and volunteer to 3rd chair/text cast while I'm not taking photos, spending time with the wife, and perusing the vendor tables.

Can't wait to meet everyone there and put faces to names!
