New ruleset: "Major!" question
« on: November 20, 2012, 02:10:36 pm »
I was curious -- effective January 1st when all penalties are major, is it still necessary to say "Major!" at the end of a penalty call with the relevant hand gesture?

The extra movement/vocalization would attract attention to the call, but the whistle at the beginning ought to do that fairly well.  The extra vocalization/hand gesture now seems redundant and traditional rather than offering any real utility.

From the new rules set...
[rule]9.2.5.1  Referees will use all officially designated hand signals as means to properly communicate to scorekeepers/penalty trackers, skaters, announcers, and fellow referees.   [/rule]

Since the document regarding hand signals has not been updated for the new rule set, this would imply that at least the "major!" hand gesture is still warranted.

Thoughts?
6.1.3.5.1.2.3 - The referee who quotes a rule with the most digits is declared the winner.

There are still times when a ref is talking to a skater without issuing a penalty.
False start, out of play, and so forth.

I will continue to say "Major" when issuing penalties. It emphasizes that situation.
You will bout as you practice.

RCRD's been playing with a version of the no-minors beta for a bit now and we've found that the verbal "major" is still very import.   For exactly the reasons that FNZebra says.

The hand signal is especially important when it gets loud.

I think at least during this transition period it is important to still call "Major". Perhaps on day it won't be necessary (although I have to agree that it is useful to seperate it from warnings), but until everyone, skaters and refs alike are used to the new standards, it is best to be clear.

At least we won't get asked twenty times during a bout "Is that a major or minor?". I hate it when they don't hear the whistle or remember it only blows on a major but i think their adrinilan has a big effect on their focus on the refs so using the verbal call "major" will still be quite helpful.

you still have "warnings" that will be verbalized so MAJOR still needs to exist in my opinion.

They're still called "Major Penalties" in the ruleset, not just "Penalties", so I'd infer that we should still use "Major!"...
