Outside Pack Ref - Call team colors instead of team names?
« on: April 19, 2009, 09:51:12 pm »
While working as a visiting outside white board operator this weekend I had a visiting outside pack ref call penalties by team name rather than by team colors when reporting the penalties to me. Neither of us were familar with the skaters. The OPR reported a penalty on the correct skate by number, but the wrong team. The end result was the correct skater was sent to the box, but the inside Whiteboard operators had a lot of confusion trying to record it to the correct team. This slowed the bout down. I realized later that if the OPR had reported penalties by team color instead of names it might have avoided this. The other OPRs were reporting by color. How do your leagues do it? Color or team name? Which works better.

I always instruct my refs (all positions) to report color, number, penalty.
I've worked very hard to break myself and my referees of using team or skater names.

Whichever is clearer. But usually that's color. But the important thing is it doesn't inhibit, but promotes, communication.
