Getting back to business
« on: March 14, 2009, 06:14:14 pm »
There have been a lot of threads lately that have not been anything especially useful as a referee. Most have been for fun. I have let them happen since things had gotten a little tense here lately, and it was possibly needed for a lot of us.
Things have since calmed down a bit and I would like everything to return to a bit of normality.
I created Zebra Huddle in hopes that discussions could result in lots of useful information without tons of filler. I want users to be able to get the information they need without having to wade through large amounts of jokes and off-topic conversations.

I have no intention of locking the threads that have popped up to lighten the mood around here, but I ask that we please return to serious discussion of the implementation of the WFTDA ruleset and procedural aspects of being a derby referee.

Thank you,
Major Wood
Your friendly Zebra Huddle admin.

Much appreciated.  When I first started wading thru the threads here it was quite tense so all I did was lurk. It's a lot calmer now.

I like having this site be primarily business oriented but I also like having the jokes and the silly stuff because it helps us zebra-folk build a sense of community with each other.  Perhaps we could have one area of the ref-only section dedicated to jokes and silly stuff?  That way we can joke around freely when the opportunity presents itself and the readers can easily skip on the shenanigans if they prefer.

Well, the problem is that readers CAN'T easily skip those threads, not if they use the "Show unread posts since last visit" link, which many of us use. Not only that, but that would be a difficult section to moderate. Since tone is a big part of humor, people could be offended and it would make our relationships on here strained, which is what we're trying our damnedest to avoid.

I was an early advocate of the Zebra Lounge, but now I've come to realize that it wouldn't be a good idea for this forum, not if we want it to remain as useful as it is right now.

Hey look, a search function! Right up there! No on the left

Perhaps we should all spend a little more time reading and a little less time making shit up.

People's idea of "humor" varies widely. What one person finds amusing will often annoy, offend, or be completely lost on another, as is clearly seen *ahem* elsewhere. Same with off-the-track interests. I feel that what this community needs the most is a straightforward resource where referees, regardless of league affiliation or experience level, can discuss the rules and their application to the game. And that's what Zebra Huddle strives to be.

I would like a Zebra Lounge since I love getting to know every aspect of Derby since I can't simply go to see a WFTDA Team bout a one hour drive away or so and to get to know you all on a "personal" level also. But I also see the point in "getting back to business" since ZH as a resource is priceless to me. And I also use the "unread posts" function all the time.

And I gotta say, as a moderator who doesn't have the luxury of ignoring threads, I'm just not interested in slogging through that kind of stuff.

Plus, I think we gotta respect Major Wood's wishes here -- he founded the ZH to be a certain thing, and we're all benefiting from it. The occasional related pic or joke, sure. But long threads, etc? No so much.

I agree with Riff and would like to see a Zebra Lounge where nothing is taken too seriously.  And I speak from experience, having lost like 8 stats points on a fun post that was relevant to being a ref.

Anyway, the Zebra Lounge could also serve as a dumping ground for moderators to take non-ref content off the main forum.  Loungewear and cigars are optional, but no majors or grand slams permitted in the lounge :)

I would like a Zebra Lounge since I love getting to know every aspect of Derby since I can't simply go to see a WFTDA Team bout a one hour drive away or so and to get to know you all on a "personal" level also.
