A question mainly meant for NSO's for leagues that are neither wftda nor apprentice or even if you don't apply to the rule, you are free to chime in. I'm curious about answers.

Experience and exposure to the sport and an inside view so to say of the rules being applied and what to expect when you move on to the next level, rather it be Apprentice league, full WFTDA member, Certification or tournament experience.

Hopefully enjoyment is up there near the top.

Even for WFTDA league members, if you are not enjoying what you are doing, do something else.  That has been my mantra since the beginning.  When this is no longer fun, I'll no longer be an official.

Many of the people I knw who NSO that aren't part of a WFTDA league, do so for the same reasons I suspect many WFTDA league NSO's do.

To be 'a part' of the sport, even if they aren't ready to be a full time A team skater, or cannot skate at all.

When I first started reffing/nso'ing, I did it because I like things to 'work' right. I felt if I could contribute to the bouts running properly, then I gave my volunteerism meaning.

Not having to buy a ticket to watch [attend] the game. lol

There, fixed that. If you are watching the game, you're not doing your job.
You will bout as you practice.

If you are watching the game, you're not doing your job.

Unless you are a lineup tracker, penalty box timer, penalty box manager, scorekeeper, penalty wrangler, inside whiteboard, or jam timer. If you're any of those things, you better be watching the game, otherwise, you're not doing your job.

Other than that, yes, you shouldn't be watching the game.

But to answer the original question, I would think it's much for the same reasons that I am a member of a WFTDA league; to be challenged by a high paced, complex sport, and to play a small role in helping craft a sport/culture that I think has a good influence on those involved (fans, skaters, officials alike).
