Switching Benches at Halftime
« on: May 15, 2009, 12:23:59 pm »
In our new venue the team benches are located at turns 3 and 4. The visitor bench is at turn 3 and the home bench at turn 4. I'm head reffing our bout on Sunday and I was asked by the visiting team if they can switch benches at halftime because the visitor bench is more inconvenient to the pivot line. I spoke to the captains of the home team and they are against switching benches, but haven't given me a reason.

I feel that switching benches ought to be a part of derby for the sake that every other sport switches something for the sake of fairness. Most sports switch sides of the field/court/rink. Since that isn't the case in debry, switching benches seems like the fair alternative.

Do you feel that I, as head ref, have the authority to require them to switch benches at halftime?

I think you probably do have the authority to require it, in the interest of fairness, but I'd still handle it delicately. I'm curious though: does your venue restrict you from putting the benches on the straight-away where the Pivot and Jammer start lines are? That's the standard practice.

Yes. We have zero room on the sides in our new venue. That's how we did it in our old venue. This is only our third bout in this venue and the issue hadn't come up yet.

Given that it's not in the rules that you can require it, I would suggest either:

A. House rule!

B. Work it out with the leagues in advance.

The answer to this specific question: No.  Not at all.

Whether or not it's fair or diplomatic to allow it to happen, or whether or not it will happen, is something for the leagues to discuss in advance and/or include as a provision in the contract.

This very situation was brought up to be this past weekend (though, thank little baby jebus the benches are b/w 4/1 and not 3/4).  I told those who asked me about it that I have no authority to mandate bench switching.

Simple point: it's not in the rules.  It's not my domain.

I know its a stretch, but is it possible to invoke 8.3.1?

(v3.1) 8.3.1 The consensus of the referees will be the final decision on any disputed point that is not clearly spelled out in these rules.

I would put this scenario under bout setup and bout coordination, which is up to the skaters to work out beforehand, not referees.
Hey look, a search function! Right up there! No on the left

Perhaps we should all spend a little more time reading and a little less time making shit up.

I can see that this is beyond my authority. In the interest of fairness I am going to hold a discussion with both teams pre-bout to get it worked out.

I'm curious: has this ever come up at a WFDTA bout?

There are certain things that the 'leagues' need to work out before hand, and report to us as Refs.
i.e. (horrible thought)
    .
    • House Rules;  both leagues need to have agreed to them otherwise it creates a nightmare when refs rule it one way, one league doesn't understand the changes, etc.,
    • BenchSet Up- While we try to make the game as impartial as possible, some things are a league issue such as where Benches are set up at. Plenty of other sports have what is known as "Home Field Advantage"  And while the Home Team being closer to the pivot line at first looks like a great advantage, that places the Visiting Team closer to the Jammer Start line, making it harder for the Home Team to get a jammer in play than the visitors.

L8R, I think it's fairly obvious why the home team doesn't want to switch, it's the same reason the visiting team DOES want to switch. Would it be fair to allow the switch? Yes, absolutely. Is it within your power? Unfortunately, no, not right now.

But, for when you DO speak to both teams, here's the process we follow here in Madison, and it works pretty fucking well for everyone, you might want to suggest it.

  • Both Captains meet with the Head Ref for a coin toss.
  • Home team Captain chooses Heads/Tails
  • Coin is tossed
  • Winning team gets to choose: Bench A, Bench B or they can defer
  • After the half, the losing team (losing the coin toss, not losing in points at the half) can choose if they'd like to switch sides or not
  • If the winning team deferred then the losing team picks and the winning team will have the option to switch at the second half
