Equipment malfunction (!) - wheels clunking
« on: May 21, 2009, 08:12:18 pm »

One of my skates is clunking.  Usually this turns out to be something stuck on one of the wheels.  However, this time there's nothing on the wheels.  Where/what should I look at?  Also, I've had my skates for about six months now and have not done anything to them other than clean the surface of the wheels and pull gobs of all different colored hairs out of the axls.  Is there anything I should be paying special attention to?

Thanks,

Might be a damaged hub. Does is spin freely, or is there a wobble or binding?

If it sounds like you skated on a piece of gum, but you didn't, you probably need to clean or replace your bearings.

D'oh! That's what I was afraid of.   :-\

I do skate hard and jumping is something the RockTown Ref Corps practices on a regular basis.

Anyone have suggestions as to what kind of bearings I should get?  Cheap(er) ones that I'll just replace every few months? Or, are there more expensive ones that would potentially last longer with the kind of skating I do?  The ones I am currently using are KWIK ABEC-5s.

I'll try cleaning them and see what happens ...

I suggest that no one buy abec rated bearings. The abec rating is nothing useful to anyone except the manufacturer. It is possible to have an abec 3 that is a better bearing than an abec 9.
I suggest on the less expensive end to get bones reds. They are excellent mid-range bearings. Jumping should have a minimal effect on the longevity of bearings.

Also, since you jump alot dont get the ceramic bearings they are for speed and will bust with jumping.

I agree with Wood here

bone reds are nice sturdy and have hardly any drag
the next step up from them are swiss
then the next ones up from them are super swiss

Here is why wood is right about the APEC Ratings (all companies use the rating but they don't have to have the same standard from one company to the next.  So one company might rate a bearing at a 3 and another at a 5 but they are almost identical)

Bearings are rated on the Annular Bearing of Engineering Council or ABEC scale. The higher the
ABEC number, the greater the manufactured precision of the bearing. There are no required
materials to meet the ABEC specifications. The bearings simply have to be made to a certain
precision. ABEC ratings are 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9, with 9 being the best.

Most applications only require 1 or 3 ratings while some very high precision parts like machine
spindles or mills will require 5, 7 or even 9 in ultra high precision.

Bearings not conforming to at least ABEC 1 or the comparable ISO P0 standards are not precision
bearings. ABEC and ISO precision gradings are used for bearings throughout the industry.

I'll third the recommendation for Bones Reds, but I wouldn't condemn ABECs either. Most of my 8mm bearings are VXB ABEC-7s, which are cheaper than Reds and comparable in skateability. (You'll need to get two sets of them, as they come in 8-packs.)

I don't condemn abec rated bearings. I think you're going to have an easier time finding a good "skate rated" bearing than an abec rated bearing. With abec rated bearings, there are tons of bad brands. You have to know which brands are good.

as well as the above suggestions, you might have a flat spot on one of the wheels?

You can often pick up Bones Reds for less than $30 a set as well.

Go to Ebay and look for marcsboardshop

Or pop onto skatelogforum.com and check out some of the vendors there.
