How is your penalty box set up?
« on: May 26, 2009, 03:19:35 am »
It is divided by team?
Jammer vs  Blocker seats?
What if a skater sits in the wrong seat do you start the penalty?

We have ours separated by position but not team. Our box timer starts the time no matter what seat the person lands in and then directs them to move to the correct seat (does not stop the time).

We have two penalty 'benches' in the middle of the track sitting back to back.  1 for each team, a nice 'star' made out of painters tape on each bench where the jammer goes.  We start the time whenever they sit down on their bench, even if they are in the wrong slot, we just then tell them to slide over.

Ooh.. now with crappy MS Paint skills ( Note, objects are not to scale  and I suck at MS Paint)

for the next home bout I want to put the penalty box in turn 4, so skaters starting out of the box enter behind the jammer line.
the seats will be:
BlockerA | BlockerA | JammerA - JammerB | BlockerB | BlockerB
seats are marked with B's and J's in team colours
one person times the blockers of team A, one the jammers, one the blockers of team B
Don't look at the game with rules-tinted glasses; look at the rules with game-tinted glasses!

Along the 1-4 straightaway it goes: team bench, penalty box, stats table, other team bench.

The penalty box is divided by team, with the teams on the opposite sides of their benches.  This is so refs can quickly assess how many skaters from each team are in the box, and so we can differentiate between people in the box and people on the bench.  There are two blocker chairs and one jammer chair for each team.  The blockers can sit in either blocker chair.  If you can picture an enlarged jammer helmet cover over the back of a folding chair, this is how we indicate the jammer chair.  (One of our skaters makes our helmet covers, and she made these out of the same material to fit over the chairs).  I stole this idea from Mad Rollin' Dolls, whose chair covers are more like pillow cases, but same idea.

Here's a crude diagram:

----TEAM BENCH----  BBJ BBJ  ----STATS TABLE----  ----TEAM BENCH----

A blocker's time starts when she is seated in a blocker's chair, and a jammer's time starts when she is seated in a jammer's chair.  There is one timer and one recorder for each side of the box, plus a Penalty Box Manager who helps oversee proper re-entry and general PB functioning, including helping with timing if necessary.  We are finishing out our intraleague season under 3.1, so this configuration may change when we switch to 4.0.

EDIT: I found a decent picture of the chair cover thingy.  It's stretchy material with velcro along the bottom to keep it on the chair.  Go here to see:

I was asked if a penalty time should start before the jammer is in the jammer seat early on. I said yes, because since the rules don't acknowledge it not starting a skater's time would be making up rules since she would in fact be in the penalty box.

Jammer-specific seats is not a rule, but an extremely common practice - therefore there's not really a place to call a "wrong seat."
