Let's Roll! - The Skate Thread
« on: May 28, 2009, 03:34:13 pm »

In the vein of bronco's whistle thread, tell us about your quads and what you'd recommend to others.

DayGlo posted a link to this helpful diagram detailing the anatomy of roller skates.

Major Wood gave us his take on various options for bearings.
I suggest that no one buy abec rated bearings. The abec rating is nothing useful to anyone except the manufacturer. It is possible to have an abec 3 that is a better bearing than an abec 9.
I suggest on the less expensive end to get bones reds. They are excellent mid-range bearings...
take on them, I'm thinking I'll just save my money and maybe buy an assortment of skateboard bushings and a torque wrench instead.

Reactors are great. Not cheap, and probably overkill for most people, but I like mine. Just make sure that whoever is mounting them to your skates knows WTF s/he is doing. If you get them mounted at the factory, they're fine; if you have a reseller do it; they'll also be fine. If you get some 16-year-old at the rink to do it, or someone who doesn't really know skates...um, maybe not. (The same rules apply to all skates, by the way.)

If I could insert the outro from "White Lines," where Melle Mel's "don't do it" sample is stuttered, I would put it right here.

Take it from someone who has 10 pairs of speed skates: if you join Skatelog, this is what will happen to you.

I use the R3 myself but also use a R3/Invader creation. Only thing from my experience is that metal hub wheels seem to work on metal/heavier plates. Example: Radar Devil Rays and Revolvers. Didnt work well on the R3 plate but worked very well on the Invader plate. Have heard similar experiences as well.

I know they have had some negative reviews about reliability but I am believer of Sure Grip Fugitives. Seem to work very well on most wood surfaces and did very well on the sport court in Atlanta. I have not had them come apart like some reviews have said but I am on my 4 set and no problems yet. Only downside is that they wear out very fast on the concrete. I have had positive experiences with a set of G-Rods that were given to me from Quadzilla of Puget Sound.

As far as bearings go, I cant complain with the Bones Swiss. Could tell a huge difference from the abec-9s. As long as you clean them and use the speed cream, they will last a long time and I tell everyone it is a great investment

My take on that line of thinking is that there's no reason why you need more than two set of wheels (or three, if you count outdoor wheels). Get a grippy set and a firm set, and you should be covered for everything. And yeah, I say this as someone who has a boat-ton of wheels. But if a freak tornado were to wipe my apartment off the map tomorrow, distributing my gear piecemeal to various cornfields in Pennsylvania, I could get two sets of skates and three sets of wheels without looking back.
