3.4.2.2 Jammer ineligible for lead
« on: January 24, 2014, 09:21:40 am »
Hi all,

I've put this here because I don't see it as strictly rules related, more procedural. In the event that a jammer goes out of bounds before entering the engagement zone, they are considered ineligible to gain lead under 3.4.2.2

In the event that they are then the first jammer to successfully navigate the pack and emerge without picking up any penalties, they should still be signalled as not lead jammer, but they (and others) may well be expecting them to gain lead. My question is whether you as a jam ref would make any signal or communication to explain to skaters, benches and audience members as to why she's not lead jammer?

My initial thoughts would be to put the hand signal in for skating out of bounds between repetitions of the "not lead jammer" signal (in the same way as putting the "no pass, no penalty" signal in to explain), but I wouldn't want to give the impression that they'd picked up a penalty.

This is, unfortunately, just one of those things for which there is no signal, and particularly no official signal. Signal 'not lead' and explain it to the skater after the game and/or the head ref between jams if needed.

I don't think I would signal a skating out of bounds because if this was in a loud venue people (opposing team's bench coach in particular) might see that, and wonder why that jammer is still on the track when the referee "clearly called a penalty on her".

And I agree with Bishop

It hasn't happened in a while but I usually signal not lead when the infraction occurs. Whether the audience or other bout personnel catch it, that's on them. I will usually tell the other jam ref that mine is ineligible.
