Scheduled downtime
« on: June 09, 2009, 05:11:39 pm »
I say scheduled only in that I intend to do some revamping soon (hopefully this afternoon). But my schedule is such that I can't really specify a time that Zebra Huddle will be down.
I started out knowing pretty much nothing about the forum software. In doing that, I did a lot of manual edits to the software to add modifications. I later found that there is an automated installer for modifications. I think what has happened is that I've built a house of cards.
A few things aren't working the way they should and it means serious work to fix it. So, I am going to shut down Zebra Huddle while I do a full restoration. I've been working on getting everything in place so the process goes smoothly (and hopefully doesn't take much time). The database will be backed up immediately before hand to multiple locations, so there should be absolutely no data loss. Some features may not be available immediately upon reopening the site, but I will be working to make it functional to what it once was.

Thank you for your patience through this.

Do we need to log out during this time? If so, will you warn us that it's time to do so? By us, I mean people like me with nothing better to do than refresh this page all day long at work.
Hey look, a search function! Right up there! No on the left

Perhaps we should all spend a little more time reading and a little less time making shit up.

There shouldn't be any reason to need to log out.

For those of you who are on here right now, I intend to get started with this very shortly. I hope to do this as an in-place rebuild, so hopefully there won't be any true downtime. If you come here and things look really screwy, that's why.

Everything seems to have gone smoothly, but please let me know if you notice any problems.

Most things are back up and running mostly as they were. Unfortunately the ref registry information and the log of changes to everyone's stats sheets is now gone. The number you had for your stats sheet is still accurate, but the information up until today as to who gave a major or grand slam to whom and why is missing. The ref registry information going missing is a mixed blessing, because it allowed me to make some minor tweaks that I was unable to do because it would have messed up what everyone had entered.

I want to list things that are currently missing, new features, fixed features and tweaks.

Currently missing:
  • Ignore user - this modification has some compatibility issues
  • Stats sheet highlighting
  • Rules tag support
  • Rules links in replies
  • Up/Down links

New features:
  • Clickable avatars - clicking on someone's avatar will take you to their profile
  • League affiliation now shows above the user's profile in each post
  • League affiliation is now an optional field during registration

Fixed features:
  • Avatars are working again!!!
  • Database errors from editing your profile/signature should be fixed

Tweaks:
  • Ref registry - Removed contact information
  • Ref registry - Combined all NSO positions into single NSO experience field
  • Ref registry - Position experience fields now have increments of 5, up to 50 bouts
  • Ref registry - Total skating experience now has increments of 5, up to 100 bouts
  • Ref registry - "Other info" text area now accepts UBB (perfect for posting a link to your resume

I'm sure I missed some things. I'll continue to work on getting the missing features added in and will update this as that happens.

I don't know about other folks, but my "Show unread posts" feature only works sporadically.  My "Show replies" one works all the time, as far as I can tell.

In other news, I like the new "New" buttons with the little stars!   :D

This seems to be a problem with all forums based on the software (possibly other forum software as well). What tends to happen is you go to a section of the board (which happens after you post in that section) and it shows the threads in that section that have new posts (by using the "new" icon) along with all the other threads in that section. At that point, those threads are marked as read, so they don't show up in the unread posts page.
At least that's my understanding of it.

That was unintended and is also sporadic. I've seen the image, but not on any page on Zebra Huddle. I wouldn't know that it was being used if I hadn't heard that from Jess and yourself.

I have my checklist of missing features from earlier in this thread completed, except for the ignore user modification.

I still have to:

  • Set ReCaptcha up (it's installed, but not configured)
  • Set up my welcome email for new users
  • Come up with a better way to verify referees

Also... A new feature, that this post will serve as a test for. I added a "you" tag. That inserts the users name in place of the tag.

If it works, this sentence will be directed at you, [you].

I've seen in other forums how this one plays well, until someone like [you] decides to  get a little too frisky with this new power.
You will bout as you practice.
