When you email rules Q&A
« on: June 14, 2009, 11:05:54 pm »
Thank you for your note!

We will get back to you as soon as possible.

That's the auto response you get. Yet... they don't get back to you at all. Maybe they respond by answering your question on the web site, more often they don't.

Why not something a little more like...

Thank you for your note!

We will respond to your note on the site if enough people are asking similar questions.

I remember when rules q & a first went up, I was waiting for an email for them to get back to me. Holding my breath, crying a little when I felt ignored. :)

Unfortunately the WFTDA Q&A isn't being staffed 24-7 by paid professionals ( Have we considered outsourcing to India?).

Its manned by volunteers doing it in addition to their other WFTDA responsibilities and handled as they can best get to them.

At least the form letter response lets you know they received it.

*ahem* It's staffed by volunteers.

You are absolutely right about everything else.  Plus, when they say "We will get back to you," I'm pretty sure they mean through the FAQ website.  It says right in the form that you may not recognize your question, because they often change the wording for clarity or to include several people's questions on the same topic.

There's that, and then there's the harsh reality that your question has either (1) already been asked and is in queue to be answered, or (2) Rules Com doesn't consider it worth answering and/or does consider it self-evident in the rules.

I doubt you're asking a similar kind of question, but something along the lines of "What should a referee do if an entire team shows up to a bout armed with uzis? Please point to the specific rule that addresses this" is unlikely to pass muster.

Not a happy story, but a genuine one.

Just because someone says "oh, hey, good catch; send that to Q&A" doesn't validate its reason for existence.

I'm not complaining about the service provided.
Just the misleading form email.

That's exactly what I'm saying, actually.  It is a gender specific term, the way that much of our language uses the word "man" to mean "person."  It's outdated, and especially in a women-run sport, I just think the English-speaking human race ought to leave it behind.  It wasn't meant as a personal attack, just a gentle reminder.

If you didn't get the automated email I'm guessing something failed in the process. I always get the email within seconds.

Posting can sometimes take a week or two, especially if the Working Group is occupied with a previous set of Q's.

Posting can sometimes take a week or two, especially if the Working Group is occupied with a previous set of Q's.

If I could have one wish from the working group it would be this.  If the group doesn't feel like the question requires a clarification then they let the requestor know.  It is the not knowing if you're waiting or being ignored that was the most frustrating aspect for me.

Thanks,

agreed, any sort of appropriate response would be nice.

Or just a auto-response that was more clear.
