3 Board
« on: June 15, 2009, 11:27:00 pm »
For those of you that use a 3 board during your bouts, do you find you focus more on those skaters who are on the board?  I would feel that since I knew they were about to get their fourth, I might pick them out and watch them more carefully than I would if I didn't know.  Are you able to remain impartial and keep your calls the same?  Am I just over-imagining the influence this has?

Thanks for your comments :)

Noah, it's a fair question, as we are all human.  But as you get deeper into your ref training, something we all have to do is work hard not to focus on skaters in this way.  With time, and especially because you've been a skater, you'll notice things like a particular skater's natural stance, or how she looks when she's setting up a block.

But it's important to differentiate this from things like noticing that she gets a lot of forearm penalties; you don't want to be watching for those forearm penalties and call one prematurely.  This is similar to watching the skaters who have 3 minors.  Part of becoming a good official will be learning how to not watch those skaters more closely than the other ones, but to just call what you do see.

If you think this will be challenging for you, I'd suggest not looking at the board for blockers who have 3, at least until you're more comfortable in the ref role.  While it's helpful to be able to direct someone off as soon as she has 4, instead of waiting for it to go through the NSOs and get back to you, it's more important to watch the whole pack (or your assigned part of it) fairly and equally.  Work on getting that down, and then move on to the little details, like checking the board as a pack ref.
