The future of the "Referee Only" section
« on: July 09, 2014, 03:26:54 pm »
So after polling and a lot of thought, I've come to the conclusion that the "Referee Only" section (which I had thought that I had changed to "Officials Only" a long time ago, oops) will not be continued. Here is how this will play out:

  • The current section will be changed to be reply-only. This will ensure that any recent topics can reach a natural conclusion and stop being posted to, while also preventing new topics from being started there. After a while, this will change to read-only. All posts will remain as an archive.
  • Verifications will no longer happen. Sorry to anyone who has had a request in and has not yet been verified.
  • Users who have already been verified will maintain their "Referee" membergroup (more on this later) that allows them access to this archive.
  • There will be an Ethics section added to the public area of ZH.
  • The Referee membergroup will be renamed to something that I haven't decided yet. It will be indicative of the ability to read the archive.
  • New membergroups will be created. Referee and NSO will definitely be among those. Users will be able to add and remove themselves from these groups. I'm considering additional groups like Skater, Coach, Announcer, etc.

Feel free to comment with any thoughts, concerns, suggestions.

Sounds like a well thought out plan, one that should keep most people happy.

I like the idea of self-selecting usergroups, makes a lot more sense than verification as ZH continues to grow :)

Hey, remember this plan? I clearly forgot about it before I finished the last bulletpoint  ::)

I just completed setting that part of it up. So now, you can select what groups you belong to.

To do that, go here
You'll see that there are 4 groups that you can join (Coach, NSO, Referee, and Skater). To join any of those groups, clikc on "Join Group" in the right of the appropriate row.
You can join any number of those groups, however only one will show under your name (next to your posts). You can choose which one by selecting it in the "Current Membergroups" section (available after you join groups), then clicking the "Make Primary Group" button.

So I joined the "NSO" and "Referee" groups with "NSO" as my primary affiliation, and now I can't see any of the NSO boards when I'm logged in as me.
I'm better at remembering "Smasher" is me than "Adam."

Sorry about that. I've made some adjustments. Please let me know if it still doesn't work.
