From skater to ref
« on: June 18, 2009, 07:40:50 pm »
I watched my derby wife get remarried last night, and it made me a bit sad.  I knew it had to be done, as I'm no longer a skater, but it was hard nonetheless.  It's difficult going from being a part of a team, or sisterhood, to being outside of that.  Has anyone else here made that transition, and how did it work for you?

I have & for me it was difficult at first. I'd built friendships with many of the skaters in Dixie. Some I've known for years before derby even started here & it took a few months for me to fully understand and adapt to the changes in my role. I've played sports my entire life so it took a little while to adjust. Once I got the basics down I found I liked refing a whole lot more than skating.  I absolutely love being such an important part of this sport and Dixie Derby as a league but not being in the spotlight. I've always been a better stage manager, never a good actor.

Now in my 3rd season of refing, I can honestly say that I would never go back to skating.
