Halfway through calling a penalty
« on: September 29, 2014, 09:47:14 pm »
Happened on a scrimmage yesterday:

Two white blockers in front of a black blocker who was trying to break the two person wall; white blocker who was closest to me on the inside seemed to be grabbing her teammate's arm.

I was sure that was a multiplayer block, so I started calling it; it went "tweet, white" and as I was about to call her number, black blocker moved away to find another spot and I realized white blocker wasn't actually grabbing her teammate, just had her hands on her to stabilize her, no linking or grabbing involved.

Since it'd have been a wrong call to make, I just stopped there. Didn't correct myself or say anything else on the matter afterwards, just let the game continue. Afterwards, one of the other refs said to me that I shouldn't stop halfway; that if I was making a call, I should stick with it. But I think it'd have been an even bigger mess-up to stick with a call I knew was wrong.

Of course that's a call that I shouldn't even have started making, but was it the right decision to stop halfway?
And what if I had called the penalty and then realized it was a wrong call? Should I have corrected it during the jam, between jams, or done nothing unless an official review was called for?

You can always stop in the middle of a call. Being right is far more important than not looking silly. You can also overturn a call any time.

You shouldn't stop in the middle of a call OFF - any more than two stray whistles leads to confusion, even if you make a mistake.

Agreed - completing a call you knew were wrong would absolutely have been a worse mistake than starting and aborting an incorrect call.

Just make sure, when this happens, to be clear with other refs and NSOs. Whenever I've done this I've usually said "Sorry, no penalty!" Or something equally awkward, but at least it's gotten the point across. :)

Only disagreement I'd have is that I WOULD stop in the middle of a call of if it was incorrect, essentially for the same reason you wouldn't continue an incorrect penalty. Say I'm JR and my jammer isn't lead, but tries to call it: If I mistakenly begin, but only get to two I'd still stop. No-one else should repeat my call off until I hit 4 anyway. I'd even enunciate that "the jam is still on" to avoid confusion, for the skaters as much as the officials, just as I'd wave someone back on if I'd incorrectly completed the penalty call.

If you realize you are making a mistake, stop. Or else fix it as rapidly as possible. Also undo the damage started as rapidly as possible.

Once you get out *tweet* "White, ..." (or just *tweet*) you now have skaters and NSOs on alert and/or thinking they may have just done something wrong.

Go ahead and say "No, no call!" or "belay that" or something to indicate that you are rescinding that one mid-stream.

If you do make a wrong call, FIX IT NOW! Don't wait until the end of the jam if you can avoid that, or for them to waste an OR on your screw-up. Attempting to hide your mistake will only make things worse, and for you to lose the respect of the skaters and other officials.
You will bout as you practice.
