NSO Qualifications for Playoffs
« on: January 12, 2015, 04:43:18 am »
Does anyone have a good feel for what it takes to be seriously considered to NSO a playoff game?  I found the requirements from 2014*, but how competitive does this end up?  Thanks to a couple of well-timed CA tournaments I'll be over the mark for total number of games, but I don't think I could get certified in time.

I also thought it was strange that the D1 and D2 requirements were the same for NSOs.  Should I aim for D2, which seems more realistic, or shotgun and hope that one of them ends up low on people?  Or would I be better off just doing as many other tournaments like Big O and aiming for playoffs next year?

I can't speak to the requirements for NSOs specifically, but actress views the importance of D2 playoffs as on par with D1 playoffs. These teams are still in the top 60 in the world. The playoff is still a WFTDA produced event. They deserve the best quality of officiating that we can give them.

It is the same likely because of a numbers reason. There are more NSO positions, and fewer certified NSO's than SOs. A win win situation for an upcoming applicant :) You can get a general feel by looking at the certified roster list on the wftda webpage. Apply as soon as your are able to.

You won't get into a Playoff if you don't apply for one (assuming you meet the requirements, when they're released), so if you want to go, apply!  Just please don't apply for a D2 and a D1, planning only to attend one--if you were accepted to both and had to decline one, it would make things far more complicated for the folks staffing them.  :)

The application requirements are the requirements to be seriously considered.

No one who meets the requirements is going to be dismissed out of hand.

Once you've established that you can meet the requirements for the tournament, it's going to depend a lot on which tournaments you apply to as location and date are going to have big impacts on the available applicant pool.  If you end up applying to the tournament that everyone applies to, the chances of being accepted are much less than if you apply to the one that has a small applicant pool.  If a tournament gets twice as many applicants as it needs, then half the pool will get turned down even if they are exceptional officials.

Take a look at last year's requirements as a guide to help prepare yourself for this year and then when requirements and applications come out, apply based on where you have the means/interest/time to go.  Don't go in expecting the D2's to have different expectations than the D1's.
