Technically multiplayer block
« on: February 25, 2015, 01:09:32 pm »
The following occurred at training tonight (scrim drills)
White blockers 1 & 2 formed a wall and were leaning against each other.
Black jammer pushed on the wall constantly exactly between the two blockers.

White blocker 1 had her hand resting on White blocker 2's upper arm. Laterally not front-backly
She momentarily grabs (wraps her fingers around) blocker 1's arm then lets off again, back to an open hand.

Black jammer was pushing against them the whole time (with no let off)
The blockers were leaning in towards each other.

I'm of the opinion it was the shoulders/hips impeding then jammer. I don't think the link was actually physically challenged, however it was in the direction the jammer was going.

I want to know if there is anything else to consider when deciding whether to call a penalty or judge no impact. Am I missing anything obvious?  - seems quite an unfair penalty to give and our job is to keep it fair.

I understand "Make a Call Ref!!" And I did. However it didn't seem blatant - more subtle and those ones are getting quite difficult.
Be fair. Be clear.

Yes, but if the link is reinforcing the wall, that's the advantage. There's quite a bit of debate about this particular call right now, but there's a few things we can look at until there's further clarification. Here's an archive.org link of the "Multiple Player Blocks" QA that was last modified on July 2, 2013 and was removed when the March 1, 2014 rules were released. It explicitly spells out that physically touching the link is not required for a multi-player block.

https://web.archive.org/web/20131010005157/http://wftda.com/rules/qa/multiplayer-blocks

I always presumed that the QA was no longer necessary due to the rewording of 5.7.8 (which remains unchanged in the January 1, 2015 rules).

In addition, if you look at the March 2014 Change Summary section on Multi-Player Blocks, it says the following:

Quote
Carifies explicitly that impeding an opponent with an impenetrable wall is illegal; this was not formalized in prior rulesets. No changes have been made to the sorts of actions that should be penalized, only to the description of those actions.

As you describe it I can see cause for a no-call. The jammer was pushing both before and after the link and it made no noticeable difference, so I don't see this meeting the "impediment" requirement for a multi-player block call.

That being said in similar situations an impediment can happen that quickly, so I wouldn't extrapolate this no-call to other quickly released links.

I guess I'd be asking why did one blocker grasp the other. Was it to stabilise the block? If it was, I'd be leaning towards a MPB. It sounds like one skater did it to gain some sort of an advantage.

Without seeing it, but as described I would call this as a MPB.

It sounds like the solid wall between white blockers may have been about to come apart and the quick grab stabilised and supported the wall? However as a ref I don't want to judge what the actual grab did (I have many other things to look at and judge).
There was a grab between 2 blockers where a Jammer couldn't get between them. MPB penalty.
