187 helmets
« on: February 11, 2016, 02:52:32 pm »
In the last couple weeks, I've encountered two helmets with 187 (as in the brand) on them. Neither was at a game, but I'm wondering about how these should be enforced.

[rule] - Roster numbers may be placed on the helmet in addition to the arm/sleeve. Numbers on helmets must match roster numbers.[/rule]
(Emphasis mine)

The two helmets (photos attached) have two different scenarios:
1. A 187 brand helmet, with the brand actually emblazoned on the helmet in a couple places, plus a couple 187 stickers.
2. A different brand of helmet with a large 187 Killer Pads sticker on it.

Technically, both are illegal, but I wonder if this should be an allowed exception, especially in the first case where the manufacturer actually puts the numbers on there.  That skater had actually just transferred from a member league and told me she'd worn the helmet in several games and it was never brought up. I'd be more likely to disallow the second example because it's aftermarket, larger and could be more easily mistaken for a roster number, but I was curious how anyone else would/has handled this.

I know some things, but there's a lot more I don't know.

I have enforced non matching roster numbers on helmets before. I usually ask the skater politely to put tape over the number. In every instance they did so and it wasn't a big issue.
