Being a drummer for a Pipe Band, I was impressed with the (forgive me if I'm wrong) Trampires, coming into the venue with a pipe band wearing zombie make up playing Scotland the Brave and I think Highland Cathedral.

I'm trying to see if my pipe band would play the National Anthem for one of my wife's team home bout.

Women's flat track roller derby is not like any other sport, and that's probably the reason most of us got into it in the first place.

Well said.

I used to skate out to "I Fought the Law" by the Clash and snear at the crowd and all that jazz. As soon as I started getting a louder response then the skaters, I've toned it down to a wave. I love to hear applause, but I definatley shouldn't get more than the skaters.

I'm in agreement that derby not being like other sports is what draws me and many others to it.

I like being able to dress up like a nutjob for derby bouts. I should check to see if the company that makes my fezes has one with a buttplug on it. This weekend I'm attending and assisting another league's bout. I'll be looking like a Shriner leprechaun from an acid flashback.

All anyone needs to do to discover how serious I am about derby is to start (and then try to escape) a conversation about it with me.

I personally dread the day derby names get replaced with real names. I'll never remember real names.

My favorite, hands down, was the Night Terrors' intro at Charm City's 2007 home opener. The house lights went off, the black lights went on, everyone skated in reverse direction, and each skater was introduced with a horror-themed couplet.

oooohhh yeah.  From a showmanship standpoint, the second home bout was even better: they all skated out of a giant coffin with a false bottom and threw black roses at the audience.  But it sure did slow down the beginning of the bout...

We used to do ref skate-arounds at Charm City, not sure if they still do?  It culminated in JFM skating around waving two american flags in each hand -- and then full speed into the pack of refs and support staff gathered off-track.  crowd loved it, but it didn't overshadow team intros.

At the Sk808 invitational tournament they introduced the refs right before the typical pre-game roller derby demonstration.  Skaters did the usual demo of pack/jam start, jamming, penalties such as tripping, elbows, back-blocking.  Then it got out of hand when a ref handed out a major for "Lousy Fake Fighting".  But it turned out to be pretty original, because it added a penalty box to the demonstration and the audience learned something.

Anyway, I like ref introductions, and sometimes even bring zebra signs when sitting in the stands.  And I love passionate fans, the kind who yell at me either way.

I did think if I HAD to skate a lap then I would take 5 or so $1 bills, sign my name to them and throw then into the crowd and give one to each announcer. ;D  Wonder what kind of reaction that would get, lol??

I might have to steal this idea if Nashville makes me skate a lap this Saturday.   :P

I'll be at the announcer table  for the game so you better give me money AND a lap dance, little lady.
Hey look, a search function! Right up there! No on the left

Perhaps we should all spend a little more time reading and a little less time making shit up.
