Attendance
« on: April 10, 2016, 09:09:24 am »
I looked through the archives and the most recently this has come up was 2014. I want to re-ask, and see how things have changed.

My league is trying to create a referee attendance policy, and I wanted to get some input/ideas from you.

What, if any, are your attendance policies?

What are the consequences of a ref does not meet them?

What do you do if you end up short for a game due to said consequences?

My league does not currently have a ref attendance policy and I wouldnt be a fan of one. We do about 5 hours of multi level scrim on Saturdays where all refs are encouraged to attend; refs attending from other leagues is not usually a problem either and can help boost numbers on busy weekends with multiple events.

Not everyone can make it to all sessions, including games. So I would staff the games based on the merits of referee ability, not whether they can make it to training or not. However I would give preference to refs who show enthusiasm and a commitment to training.

Our skaters are very grateful for any times the refs can get there and often we have skater refs who also assist with scrim/games.

I've seen some leagues with a ref roster but it's more been a written version of what refs can make what time, in order to staff scrims effectively.

Getting out the EOI for games early (like via Facebook) can sometimes help mitigate the effects of low official numbers.

I think the important thing to remember is that it's a hobby and there is life outside of derby. If you have a high quality ref training system then people who want to do it will attend. I would definitely be against some kind of penalty (like not being staffed for a game) based on consequences of an attendance policy, given you need 7 refs for a game, often more for a double header. I would instead, be keen on creating a great ref culture that encourages refs to attend training
Be fair. Be clear.

I keep attendance at practice. Missing practice on a day the referee has another derby event (even if not at the same time) is acceptable.

I don't have a set minimum attendance.  But I do let my referees know that when it comes time to staff refs for games it will be one of multiple factors I take into account.

Attendance policies are only enforceable if you can still staff games when people miss the requirement. If you can't enforce it, then you can't have it.

That said, our league does have a policy, and it's very nice. It has a load of benefits:
* It helps our newer officials, who need to be at practice the most, get feedback from the more experienced officials.
* It lets officials work positions beyond the most needed (ie: not just pack ref and jam timer).
* It helps the skaters in the league better understand the rules, the penalties they're being called on, and also seeing the officials as human being rather than just the <insert expletive here> in stripes/pinks.
* It helps everyone from getting rusty (I feel it if I miss a week of practice).

You can tailor your policy to meet your requirements. If the skaters are doing off-skates cardio all practice, is there a reason for officials to be there? If not, don't make it part of your requirement.
