Drug tests / Doping
« on: January 27, 2018, 07:05:37 pm »
Hello everybody,
Having the upcoming World Cup in Manchester in mind, I was wondering if by now there have been implemented any drug tests / doping tests in Roller Derby.
In this forum I could only find a similar topic that dates back to 2012. Has anything been changed, or does it still mean that players could actually take e.g. pain surpressors (or whatever) before a match to get an advantage and nobody would be able to notice?

Thanks for some eludication or at least a few opinions on that matter.

Even if derby could agree on a protocol for this sort of thing, I doubt there's the resources available in the sport to *pay* for the testing.  At this point, we're on an honor system, because it treats everyone like a mature adult, and also because an honor system is cheap.

Actually there have been tests in the french champs a year or two ago. And they could happen in the german Bundesliga and probably a few other national championships in Europe.

The reason is that the national governing bodies in these countries are part of/affiliated with the national roller sports federations, which in turn have agreements with the national anti doping agencies that make NADA/WADA rules apply to all competitions run by these governing bodies.

I would expect the situation to be the same for USARS and FIRS run events.

WFTDA as well as B&T/RDNC and MRDWC are not affiliated with WADA either directly or indirectly at this point, so there will not be any tests enforced from the outside for WFTDA play or the world cups. And the inside reasoning has been described by Smasher above.

That's fascinating.  Who pays for the drug tests?

I'd also be curious if there was drug testing for Derby at the FIRS Roller Games that was in China.
