It was f$#%*ing the most amazing bout I've ever reffed. Worth three years of training and learning and spending, just for those 60 minutes.

Also *very* proud of our crew. A few things here and there, as always, but basically: rock solid.

It was thrilling to watch.  Here's what I want to know: did anyone do anything differently to ensure that the final whistle blasts were heard?  I was intensely watching the jam clock and the jammer in the pack because I was curious to see if it would be scored properly.

No - other than being sure that every blast was as loud, as sharp, and as quick as one could make it. Everybody on the crew who needed to knew their way around a Fox 40 :)

And . . ."if" it would be scored properly? Have a little faith!

was it a major or an expulsion?

That one was a rough one. I got to call a misconduct for hearing a skater say (not to me): "You've got to call that sh*t, you retard."

Classy.

Misconduct = major
Gross Misconduct = expulsion
Hey look, a search function! Right up there! No on the left

Perhaps we should all spend a little more time reading and a little less time making shit up.

Thanks Jess, I was wondering if "sh*t" and "retard" qualified as repetitive and excessive :)

We basically considered it one action, one foul. Head Ref decided not to expel, but if there was another incident, a Gross Misconduct likely would have been issued.

Not to let the conversation dwell on this one negative point, but I heard it as something other than "retard". JZ was a couple of feet closer though.

In better memories:

OK, there were no close bouts until the last three. But there was still some fantastic derby played in each and every one of those easy wins - and the absolute awesomeness that was the final bout will be what everyone remembers for a long time.

The refs were all amazing to watch and work with - nobody did a bad job (but there was still a range from good to fantastic - everybody learns).
The NSO crews were tight under an amazing amount of pressure.
No coaches were thrown out (that I noticed) for being coachy.
I couldn't hear the announcers at all, but I'm sure they were good too.

I have a gigantic bruise on my ass from the exhibition bout. Every time I saw the lads flailing around turn 4 at top speed I feared for my life - I may not volunteer to do that again without some football pads. Prior to this the largest skater to take me out was 5'2".

The after parties didn't suck either.

Best of luck to everyone heading to Northerns - I've got bouts at home this week, and then I'm heading to Southerns.

Incredible. I sincerely doubt there will ever again be a situation in a game of derby as dramatic and exciting as that last jam.

Hey now, there are three more regional tournaments to get through!  After that, Nationals!

It's true that East is one of the more competitive regions, but keep watching for awesome tournament play (and reffing!) the next three weekends.  Even if only to poke your friends in the ribs and go "I kinda know him/her" when some of your Huddle Buddies whiz by.  ;D

Well, seeing as Gotham hadn't lost a bout since September 2007 (or so my sources say), you'd be hard pressed to find a more exciting last jam. But definitely prove me wrong in these next tournaments!

That I was. Clear as a bell.

It also broke an 18-game winning streak.

But I am sure it's a sign of even more excitement to come. Easterns is only one-fourth of a very delicious pie.

Heh, I have every intention of watching them and keeping an eye out for familiar names and faces! :D And for all that East has a high standard of competition, I would find it a lot harder to call how some of the other regions' tournaments are likely to pan out...

My initial (over-excited) statement was based on the story surrounding the bout - the previously invincible Gotham, defending champions and all-round derby juggernaut, having their unprecedented winning streak ended in the most dramatic fashion in the final second of the final jam of the tournament final. I'm sure that there will be many more last-second ghost point victories in bouts and tournaments to come, but that one was special. Having said that though, my saying "ever again" was somewhat hyperbolic - "for a very long time" would have been a more reasonable thing to say.
