10.1.3 Optional protective gear and face cages.
« on: November 14, 2009, 05:35:02 pm »

I'm not going to go into the personal medical reasons for this (unless the skater allows me to) but we have a skater who now cannot take a direct impact to the face without it causing serious medical issues.

She is non-skating for a few months while she heals but, obviously - she wants to come back.

She has been asking about face protection and I wondered if I may consult the huddle as to if anyone knows of any form of (legal) face protection?  Links welcome.

Also, I noticed that face cages are explicitly prohibited. Not ever having seen one can someone give me some indication as to why this would likely be?

Thanks,

Red

By face cage, are you referring to one of the face shield type things I've seen in the NBA, for example? I've seen an almost complete face mask made out of clear plastic of some sort.

Now, this is just a guess... But I would think the cage-style masks are banned because if you get a finger caught in it, you might come away with a bloody stump.

On the other hand, yeah. The face mask-style ones are probably kosher, but I don't know if that provides enough impact protection for someone in her condition.

An example, though I believe there are many differing:

I would imagine it would help spread the impact, though not "injury proof". I imagine it would help.

I had a skater at ECDX with a form-fitting face shield that I noticed during equipment checks. It was hard plastic, but since it was fitted to her face the head ref said it was acceptable.

A skater can wear a form fitting face shield like Cliquework posted above. It's allowed.
She could also wear an old 70s style full-face motorcycle helmet like the skater from Detroit wears. I'm sure you've seen her on the DNN Nationals feed.

Looks far more protective than the face shield.
