Happy Birthday to Zebra Huddle
« on: December 19, 2009, 06:40:37 am »
Well, 12/19/09 marks one year from the launch of Zebra Huddle. So I decided it was time to renovate a bit, change the look and add some features.

So lets point out the big changes:

Layout - Obviously the extra columns are different. With all the new features, these columns will help provide you with easier access to different parts of the site as well as information. The skin used is also somewhat future-proofing ZH.

ZH Classifieds - You can post ads asking for visiting refs, or to sell your used gear.

ZH Files - A downloads system for various files. You can upload files to this as well. Please make sure these are files you wish to share with the world, as they are public. Also, by uploading, you are certifying that you have the appropriate rights/permissions to upload that file.

Scoreboards - As I said, ZH Files is hosting 2 scoreboards. DerbyBoard 2.2 and the CRG Scoreboard are located there. There are also folders for skins for each program. I intend for ZH to be a repository of those skins. Feel free to start uploading the skins you may have for these scoreboards.

ZH Store - There is nothing in there just yet, but there will be. I hope to start selling ZH branded merchandise. Be aware the the first few items may be pre-orders, because I'm on a limited budget.

No more ads! - Zebra Huddle has gotten rid of the ads and switched to a donation-supported system. If you are happy with what Zebra Huddle provides to you, donate some money to help offset the costs* of keeping Zebra Huddle running and making it better over time. The donation link is in the column on the left :)

Events - The Events section is now public. This means that skaters can get on here now to say that they have something coming up and may need volunteers.

Gear - There is also now a section devoted to discussing gear.

Non-Skating Officials - A board has been created for referees and NSOs to discuss NSO issues. It is divided into an area to talk about forms as well as one to talk about working together.

Grand Slams/Majors - Before I start this one... Yes, I know it is no longer called a grand slam. I have changed the way these work. You will now be able to see the reasons given for giving a grand slam or major. I have cleared the reasons for any given to date, since those giving them were under the impression that it was not visible to anyone else.

Rules link - Many of you asked for it... There is now a link in the menu in the left column to the web version of the rules!

There are certainly other changes that have been made, but those are most of the ones you will notice.

*The normal operating expenses are in the neighborhood of $100/year. Obviously, there is a lot of labor involved in maintenance. This upgrade was a large one and cost several hundred dollars (I haven't kept close tabs, because it wasn't important).

Fantastic. As always, if there's anything I can do within my particular idiom to help just let me know.

Thanks for all the hard work Major.  I hope you know how much I (we) all appreciate the time and effort you and the other mods have put in to make this such a fabulous resource for us to use.  It has certainly helped me tremendously in my own understanding and application of the rules.

I wish you a very happy and relaxing holiday season!

Unlike Cliquework, I'm pretty useless in helping out in any meaningful way other than donating money.  So I chipped in a 10 spot to get things rolling (not that I plan to crow about donations in the future.)  It seems to be saying that I really only donated $9.41 via Paypal.  Is that correct?  If so, is there a way to donate so that more of the money goes directly to ZH?

Paypal takes a transanction fee, plus a percentage. I don't know the specifics offhand.
A higher percentage of the donation gets to ZH with a higher monetary value donation. That's not a sales pitch, just a statement of fact.

I got a confirmation e-mail regarding my donation.  One thing that caught my eye was:

Charge will appear on your credit card statement as "PAYPAL *YOURMOM"

It seemed a little tacky to me at first, but then I figured out it must have something to do with the "Your Mom Likes Roller Derby" website?

Yes, I have several yourmom domains. The email address associated with my paypal account is derived from those domains.

How about a negative retainer option for WFTDA certified referees?  ;D

Here's how it would work: a certified referee has to have one quality post (experience, insight, etc.) per week or be automatically charged $1 for each week they neglect to do so.

Yeah, yeah ... I know it will never happen but think of how much better we'd all be if it did work this way and the certified refs actually obliged.

Rules link - Many of you asked for it... There is now a link in the menu in the left column to the web version of the rules!

And it's hyperlinked!  This is good stuff.  One thing I might actually be willing to take the time to figure out is how to add even more hyperlinks to the new rule set.  I'd also love to be able to do queries with the rules, clarifications, and best practices.  I have a vague idea about how to go about this.  I'm sure there are better/easier ways though.

Just noticed the little gears beside your posts allow edits (Modify) within the same page, as opposed to leaving thread. Sweet.

Did it just now.

And again. Lovely.
