i just lost a stat point... and i dont know why

Eh.  I think I lost one the other day.  Don't give a shit, really - though what I consider important is that I wish whomever was compelled to do so would be able to muster up enough effort to tell me why.  Maybe I could stop doing whatever it was, then.

The policies sound both succinct and workable. I particularly like 'douchebaggery' as a descriptor.

This whole stats things seems a little dauting though. As a newbie to ZH, derby and reffing, it is a little worrying to read a lot of what has been written here ... I'd like to take the great advice to just not worry about stats, but it seems like they are kinda a big deal.

do you mean the stats points in this forum?
if so don't worry about them
they're no big deal (until you lose one and dont know why  :D )
just join in

if you mean STATS as in stats for bouts... they are a big deal
you can get a lot of useful info and ask questions about derby stats in the yahoo group

I'm joining Bishop's "positive reinforcement" club and tossing him a grand slam for suggesting it.

Also, as an FYI to newbies, an easy way to pickup majors (negative feedback) is to disagree with anything WFTDA. Personally, I disagree with this practice. :-X

Actually, majors are generally given out to people who are being argumentative to the point that they are either offending people or just plain pissing them off. Don't make up rules while trying to pass them off as real either. Disagreeing is fine- but it's all about how you go about it. Don't come in here thinking you can't give an opposite viewpoint because oh noes you may get a major- prove your alternative viewpoint and don't be a dick and you'll be alright.

What Jess said. Disagreeing with WFTDA rules is (generally) not the problem (I could give you a list of my own . . .).

Majors are usually given (at least by the mods) for posts perceived to be disruptive, willfully aggressive, or generally unhelpful or counterproductive in their nature or intent.

I agree with Bronco that it does happen even though the guidence given by the website moderators intends Majors to be reserved for hostility and douchbaggery.

In one case I didn't understand why a (more experienced) referee would use referee discretion to override a section of the rules.  The major I got was "reading the rules too literally"  ::)

The simplest way to deal with the karma system is to completely ignore it and trade on your reputation, not some integer approximation thereof.

Moderators, please remove this post if you think I'm violating some copyright law.  Alternatively, if it's not and you have a better place for it, by all means move it there (or if you wish to remove it for some other reason that's fine too.)

I've been meaning to post this for awhile now, but couldn't verify whether or not the material was copyrighted somewhere.  I don't think it is since I've read it elsewhere, I'm just not sure.  The following text could alternatively be entitled, "How to be a Douche Bag."   It provides a stellar example of how one should not go about discussing/arguing view points.

Reminder - Stats system isn't for "disagreement".  Do not give someone a "Major" because they have a question or they are wrong on a rule. It stifles discussion. May also turn away those new to the board. I'm seeing members with all of three logical and intelligent posts in the negative.

Giving someone a negative stat is for being a douche and violating page one of this thread.

I'm a newbie to ZH so i've been giving Grand Slams to everyone that has answered any question (that i have but dont need to post bc of ZH) that has immediately answered the first part of any thread. I totally agree with the majors though and would totally accept a major if i was being a douche bag on ZH. For an example my first thread was an argument against another official and had my stats been awarded then i probably would have started my stats sheet with a minus one. I just had to get my pissed off opinion out there to Zeeb's that may have shared my opinion. But i forgot rule #1 of life: opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one, you dont need to share them with everyone and most of the time they stink LOL side note ZH has helped me out so much since i joined.
