Referee in Training

« on: February 07, 2010, 04:24:13 AM »

tonight i registered on here and am now glued…

i learn best through incidentals. so being at scrimmage practice, talking about things that happened in scrimmage and gameplay is really helpful to me.

at practice i have been working on building confidence to make quick accurate calls. at this point sometimes it takes a little longer than i would like to process a call. hopefully it will get better with time.

progress and info:
retired skater
NSO'd end of last year. point catcher.
just passed a skating assessment and am about to take the rules test.

These threads contain some useful stuff for newer refs:

Question from newbie ref

You Ain't Got What It Takes Useful because what reffing does take is discussed.

Advice for the first ref in a new league

There are a lot of refs I meet that know of me purely through Zebra Huddle.  One of the most common statements I hear is, “I’m too afraid to post on the forum!”  So, my best advice would be to get over that fear and go ahead and post any and all officiating questions that you have.  That’s what’s worked for me because it significantly reduced my learning curve.  The search function is a good place to start too because often someone else has had a similar question in the past.  Oh, and the Glossary, lots of important stuff in there that can get overlooked.

And welcome to the huddle.   Smiley

Here is an article that j.z. (via Prof. Murder) posted awhile back.  The link in the orginial thread doesn't seem to work any more so I had to dig around to find another place that hosted it.  Anyway, it's gots good stuff in it.  Smiley

A fascinating read (and props to Prof. Murder for finding this), both for the core sociological similarities for officiating across sports, and for contrastive differences in derby:

Performances and negotiations: A case study of a wrestling referee (from Qualitative Sociology v.5:1, 1982)

note that link no longer works

Here's a link that will work:
