The Media Gets It Right: NYT Coverage of GGRD/NWK

I'm stunned by the quality of the writing (and the absence of the dreaded by day/by night, for the most part), even if I shouldn't be.

That is a good article. My all-time favorite derby article will probably always be this one, though:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/02/AR2007100201366.html

It was written about one of DC Rollergirls' home teams, Scare Force One (who were undefeated in intraleague play until last November), in the months before the league's first home bout. It does unfortunately involve the typical "by day/by night" cliche. However, it also focuses on "sport over spectacle" without the constant need to advertise and evangelize same. Derby has its handful of critics, and it always will; every sport does. Getting defensive about their words and attitudes instead of dismissing them offhand only serves to suggest that there is some truth to them. The sport really does stand by itself, regardless of what its players wear or what their names are. If that were not the case, it would be dead or dying instead of growing exponentially. (/soapbox)
