LMAO, worst and most expensive pulbic transport in Europe ;) Can I borrow that Zebra dude? :p
So find some friends & drive.  It's only a little over 7 hours from Swansea to Glasgow according to Google Maps.  That's about the same amount of time it will take for me to get to the closest clinic to Madison, WI, USA.  And there are a lot of officials out there who would consider themselves to be lucky enough to be the that close to a clinic.  For example, most of the refs in Australia, every European ref outside the UK, every ref in the central, south, & southwest US as well as all those in California.

2,245 flying miles and at least $1000 EACH, for my wife and myself to attend. We will stay a few extra days and make a bit of a holiday of it.
Never been to the Gold Coast.

The closest clinic to me last season was a 9 hour drive, and I went without hesitation.

This year, it's a one hour drive :)

I had zero hesitation in paying around $500 to get to the Gold Coast one this year.
And I'm only 1 hour flying time away!

Though we did host a small referee clinic not too long ago, ZH has not yet officially hosted a referee clinic. So don't feel too bad there.

I'd love to find out about any clinics nearby. I'm guessing the next ones will have the new ruleset implemented so we will have to wait until 2013. :(

I just had a short conversation with Pantichrist. It is not up to the WFTDA but up to potential hosts how many clinics there will be. They are also flexible with the requirements, e.g. if you only have one track they will adapt. So go and try to convince your league to host a clinic!

Thanks Riff.
I couldn't off the top of my head remember the numbers from the post I read, I just remembered reading they were hoping to have a Central America one.

From the WFTDA website at http://wftda.com/news/seeking-2013-clinic-hosts:

We are now looking for leagues interested in hosting 2013 WFTDA Officiating Clinics in the United States, Europe, and Australia.

Nothing about Central or South America, although I can't imagine they wouldn't consider it so long as they had sufficient trainers that were fluent in Spanish or Portuguese.

Nothing about Central or South America, although I can't imagine they wouldn't consider it so long as they had sufficient trainers that were fluent in Spanish or Portuguese.

Or the provision of translators were provided for in a proposal.

WFTDA provides instructors.  To my knowledge, there has never been a requirement for those instructors to be fluent in more than one language.  The number of potential languages needed to cover all areas where clinics might be held is simply an impractical one for them to incorporate into the requirements for selecting instructors.

WFTDA has member or apprentice leagues in countries where the official languages include English, French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, and Japanese.  Finding instructors who are qualified to teach WFTDA clinics and fluent in one of those languages in addition to English is, with the exception of French, very unlikely.  Finding qualified instructors who speak some of those languages in any capacity (specifically Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, & Japanese) is also very unlikely.  And keep in mind that the clinics run classroom portions for the ref and NSO tracks concurrently.  So it would not just be an issue of finding one qualified instructor fluent in the language or languages most likely to be spoken by clinic attendees, it would be an issue of finding both a qualified ref instructor and a qualified NSO instructor fluent in those languages.  And not just fluent in the language, but fluent in the technical terms that would be utilized in discussing derby in that language.

So yes, it would be very awesome to see clinics in areas such as South America, or in areas of Europe or Asia that have derby but do not currently have WFTDA-affiliated leagues.  But i think anyone submitting a proposal who expects their clinic attendees to be speaking anything other than English, or possibly French, would be wise to include considerations for translation in their proposal.  Or, at the very least, to contact WFTDA to determine what accommodations they would recommend and/or require.

EDIT:  A few hours after this post was originally written the list of leagues participating in the WFTDA Apprentice Program was updated, adding 22 new leagues.  The list of official languages spoken in countries having WFTDA member & apprentice leagues has, accordingly, been updated.  Also, despite knowing that the league in Helsinki is a WFTDA member, I managed to omit Finnish from my original list; that has now been corrected, and I apologize for the omission.
